Repayment begins six months after graduation or if the student drops below half-time status. The Subsidized Loan is based on need, and interest is paid by the government while the student is in school; interest on the Unsubsidized Loan begins to accrue upon disbursement of funds.
The Federal Government requires all new, first-time borrowers to complete Loan Entrance Counseling and a Master Promissory Note. Please click below for more information and to complete these two loan steps.
The Direct PLUS (Parental Loan to Undergraduate Students) loan is a low-interest loan that parents take out on the student’s behalf. The FAFSA must be completed in order to be eligible. The interest rate is fixed at 5.30%. Repayment begins within sixty days after the loan is disbursed or may be deferred until six months after the student graduates or drops below half-time status. Please click here for more information and to apply.
This is a variable rate loan that students take out on their own behalf. This loan requires a credit check and generally, a cosigner. Interest rates vary depending on the lender. Please note that an alternative loan should be considered a loan of last resort. You may qualify for Title IV loans (Perkins loans, William D. WORK STUDY
By being employed on campus through the Federal Work-Study Program, students can make up to $2,000+ per year. It is important for students to realize that a Federal Work-Study (FWS) award, if included in your financial aid award letter, is significantly different from other award items in two ways:
Unlike grants, scholarships, and loans, FWS is not a guaranteed amount, since it is the student’s responsibility to find a FWS job on campus.
Unlike grants, scholarships, and loans, there is no automatic posting of dollars to the student account. This occurs only if the student takes the initiative to deposit the biweekly paycheck into his or her own account.
When planning how the FWS award may affect your annual costs, you must project the actual amount you expect to earn. In many cases, the actual amount may be less than the total allowed by your Financial Aid award.

THE MYTH Private Christian Higher Education is not affordable. |
THE FACTS The cost of attending Trinity for one year is approximately $38,000. But that figure does not include deductions for scholarships, grants, loans or work-study options. Most families find these deductions greatly reduce the price they’ll actually pay. Just as few car buyers pay the full sticker price of their vehicle, many families are not paying Trinity’s “sticker price.” |
THE MYTH Private Education is only available to families with higher income levels. |
THE FACTS Here is a breakdown of annual family income levels for Trinity’s student body. And with over 95% of our students receiving financial aid, Trinity has students from all economic backgrounds. |

It is never too early to start looking for financial aid. High school juniors and seniors are encouraged to research possible outside sources of financial aid, attend college fairs and financial aid information sessions in your community, ask questions and learn all you can about the financial aid process.
1. COMPLETE THE FREE APPLICATION FOR FEDERAL STUDENT AID (FAFSA).
Complete the FAFSA as soon as possible after October 1.
October 1: Earliest date to submit the FAFSA. You may estimate your income on the FAFSA before filing your tax return. You simply need to adjust the income information once your taxes are filed.
Illinois Residents: A FAFSA must be submitted for eligibility to be determined for the State of IL MAP Grant. Since there is a finite amount of grant money, we recommend submitting your FAFSA as close to October 1 as possible.
No later than April 1: Submit the FAFSA to receive priority consideration for Trinity financial aid
Do you have questions about completing the FAFSA? You can contact our student financial services team any time at [email protected] with any questions you may have.
2. TRINITY INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY SCHOOL CODE: 001772
3. REVIEW AND RETURN YOUR AWARD LETTER.
You may accept or reject any portion of the financial aid offer by circling (A) for accept or (R) for reject. Please return your award letter stating your intention to our office within 30 days of receipt.
4. COMPLETE A DIRECT MASTER PROMISSORY NOTE.
If this is the first time you are requesting a Direct Loan while at Trinity, you will need to complete a Master Promissory Note.
5. COMPLETE DIRECT/PERKINS LOAN ENTRANCE COUNSELING.
Before a Direct or Perkins loan can be applied to your student account, federal regulations require that you complete entrance counseling online through Direct and Perkins processes. Entrance Counseling provides information about how to manage your student loans both during and after college.

Private, or alternative student loans are credit-based loans available from participating private lenders that help students to cover gaps in the financing of their education.
WHO MIGHT APPLY FOR A PRIVATE LOAN?
Private Student Loans may be a viable option for students who:
PRIVATE STUDENT LOANS AS A LAST RESORT
Private student loans should be considered as an option of last resort, after all other resources, including federal student aid, have been exhausted. Educational debt should be very carefully considered and limited to amounts needed to fill a gap between cost and other sources of finances.
TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF PRIVATE LOANS
Terms and conditions of private student loans vary according to the loan providers. Look for differences in interest rates, fees, credit checks, co-signer requirements, loan limits and terms of repayment. Students are encouraged to engage in smart consumerism practices and evaluate each loan product closely prior to choosing a lender. For additional help in knowing how to evaluate lenders, visit Mapping Your Future’s Private Loan Guide.
Please note that private student loans are not eligible for loan consolidation programs through the federal government.
FINDING A PRIVATE LOAN PROVIDER
Many, but not all, lenders participate in private student loan programs. TIU maintains a historical list of lenders who have provided loans to TIU students within the last 3-5 years. This list, with links to lender websites, is provided for your convenience and is in no way intended as an endorsement of a particular lender(s). Please be aware that you are not obligated to apply for a private student loan, nor are you obligated to choose a lender included on this list. We urge you to consider carefully your decision to take out a private student loan and your choice of a private student loan provider.
APPLYING FOR A PRIVATE STUDENT LOAN

By being employed on campus through the Federal Work-Study Program, students can make up to $2,000+ per year. It is important for students to realize that a Federal Work-Study (FWS) award, if included in your financial aid award letter, is significantly different from other award items in two ways:
When planning how the FWS award may affect your annual costs, you must project the actual amount you expect to earn. In many cases, the actual amount may be less than the total allowed by your Financial Aid award.

GRANTS
Grants are a form of financial aid that do not need to be repaid. Students pursuing a degree at Trinity Florida may be eligible to receive federal or state grants. Additionally, Trinity International University makes tuition scholarships (see below) available to students who demonstrate special ability or financial need. The University reserves the right to limit the number of scholarships awarded in any program.
Federal Pell Grant
To be considered for this grant, the student must complete the FAFSA and send it to the Federal Processor. Once the FAFSA is processed, the Student Aid Report (SAR) will be generated and sent directly to the student. The student is instructed to review the SAR for any needed corrections. The TIU Financial Aid Office will evaluate the electronic SAR to determine the student’s eligibility. Students may be eligible for awards ranging from $585 to $5,775 per academic year.
Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)
To be eligible, the applicant must be a full-time student at TIU and show a financial need as reported on the SAR. Awards range from $100 to $1,000 per academic year. This program has limited funding, so it is strongly recommended that students apply early.
TEACH Grant
Through the College Cost Reduction and Access Act of 2007, Congress created the Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant Program that provides grants of up to $4,000 per year to students who intend to teach in a public or private elementary or secondary school that serves students from low-income families. For more information, please visit the TEACH Grant portion of the federal website.
Student loans can come from the federal government or from private institutions like banks. The money is borrowed and will need to be paid back to the government or bank with interest.
A need-based long-term loan administered by the U.S. Department of Education. Eligibility is determined by the information provided on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the schools total cost of attendance minus all other aid received. The interest rate is a fixed 6.8% for graduate and professional students. Interest rate for undergraduate students for loan disbursed on or after July 1, 2010, will be fixed at 4.5%. Interest accrual and repayment begins six months after the student graduates, drops below half-time enrollment status or separates from the institution.
A long-term loan administered by the U.S. Department of Education. Eligibility is determined by the information provided on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the schools total cost of attendance minus all other aid received. The interest rate is fixed at 6.8% and interest accrual begins at the time the loan is disbursed. The borrower is responsible for the interest that accrues while in school and during grace and deferment periods. Students may opt to pay the interest while in school or have the interest added to the outstanding principle. Repayment begins six months after the student graduates, drops below half-time enrollment status or separates from the institution.
The Direct PLUS Loan for Parents is a low-interest, government guaranteed loan available to parents of dependent undergraduate students. This is a non-need based loan for those who do not have an adverse credit history. The interest rate is currently fixed at 7.9% and starts accruing immediately after the first disbursement, and repayment begins within 60 days after the loan is fully disbursed. You can postpone repayment on your Parent PLUS loan until six months after the dependent student leaves school or drops below half-time. During this postponement period, the parent is responsible for the interest that accrues and has the option to pay the accrued interest or have the interest added to the outstanding principal. Borrowers may borrow up to the total cost of attendance minus other financial aid received. Dependent students whose parents do not qualify for a Direct PLUS may borrow the Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loan up to the student’s loan limit based on grade level.
The Direct PLUS Loan for Graduate/Professional Students is a long-term, low-interest loan for Graduate and Professional Students, not their parents. This is a non-need based loan for those who do not have an adverse credit history. The interest rate is currently fixed at 7.9% and starts accruing immediately after the first disbursement. The student (borrower) is responsible for the interest that accrues while in school and during grace and deferment periods. Students may opt to pay the interest while in school or have the interest added to the outstanding principle. Repayment begins 60 days after the loan is fully disbursed, while the student is still enrolled. Borrowers may borrow up to the total cost of attendance minus other financial aid received.
Borrowers must apply for the maximum eligibility under the Direct Stafford Loan Program prior to applying for Direct PLUS Loan for Graduate/Professional Students.
This is a variable rate loan that students take out on their own behalf. This loan requires a credit check and possibly, a cosigner. Interest rates vary depending on the lender. Alternative loans are available through commercial lenders for educational costs during periods of enrollment. They are based on credit-worthiness. We recommend that students request a copy of their credit report to check for accuracy and that all valid credit problems are addressed before applying for an alternative loan. We strongly suggest that students submit a FAFSA and seek federal loan assistance before attempting to participate in any alternative loan programs.
Private loans should be considered a last resort.
