BANNOCKBURN, IL, October 14, 2024 — Andrew Abernethy (MDiv ’06, PhD ’12) has been appointed president of the Institute for Biblical Research (IBR).
“Over the years, the Institute for Biblical Research (IBR) has become a ‘home’ for me,” said Abernethy, “and many other believing scholars and students from many backgrounds to engage in high-level biblical research. It is an honor to serve the IBR community as its next president.”
Last September, Abernethy was nominated by the outgoing president of IBR, Lynn Cohick, to take her place as she moves on from this role. In a letter to the board of IBR, she wrote, “[I]t is my honor to bring before IBR Fellows and Senior Fellows the nomination for president, Dr. Andrew Abernethy…”
According to the IBR website, “Founded in 1973, the Institute for Biblical Research (IBR) is an organization of evangelical Christian scholars with specialties in Old and New Testament and in ancillary disciplines. IBR’s vision is to foster excellence in the pursuit of Biblical Studies within a faith environment.”
“Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (TEDS) is proud of Abernethy’s achievement,” said Dean David Pao, “His work, along with this new appointment, is a true embodiment of the love for both the church and the academy that is held dear by the entire TEDS community.”
“My training at TEDS—both in my MDiv and PhD—gave me not only the essential tools in exegesis but also a vision for undertaking biblical scholarship theologically for the good of the church.”
Dr. Abernethy currently teaches at Wheaton College and is the author of Savoring Scripture (Intervarsity Press, 2022), which is currently in its fifth printing.
