Trinity Law School Becomes Education Partner with the Society for Human Resource Management

January 4, 2024
SANTA ANA, CA – Trinity Law School (TLS) is pleased to announce that it is now an education partner with the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). This partnership brings with it the authorization to offer SHRM certification preparation courses so that Trinity students or alumni can be prepared to take the SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP exams. SHRM certification provides individuals with the skills and resources needed to perform general HR-related duties or to pursue a career in HR management, as well as instills an array of interpersonal, leadership, and business dexterity that can be useful for any vocation in the marketplace. “Trinity Law School is proud to be preparing its students for the competitive job market, giving them the unique opportunity to simultaneously earn a Master of Legal Studies (MLS) degree and become SHRM-certified,” said TLS Dean Eric Halvorson. SHRM is the world's largest HR professional society, representing 300,000+ members in more than 165 countries. For nearly seven decades, the SHRM has been the leading provider of resources serving the needs of HR professionals and advancing the practice of human resource management. “The SHRM certification is the standard for hiring Human Resources professionals in the field today,” said Dawn Greene, vice president of human resources and organizational development for Trinity International University, “and those that have it understand the pivotal role that the position plays in strategic planning and human capital management.” Trinity’s MLS degree gives students the background they need to confidently understand legal documents, proceedings, and rights and is taught from the distinctly Christian worldview for which Trinity is known. Certain tracks within the MLS program (Church and Ministry Management, General Legal Studies, and Nonprofit Organizations) can take the two SHRM Certification Exam Prep courses as electives, while the Human Resources Management track includes these courses as a part of its required core curriculum. This specific track adds to the MLS program an understanding of law as it relates to an HR role, arming students with the skills to confidently guide a company professionally and with integrity. As the hub of any business organization, the human resources department handles everything from recruiting, payroll, benefits, employee development, training, administration, and knowledge of state and federal laws. Such an important and versatile position requires a solid foundation of engaging with legal questions and governmental regulations. “The SHRM certification exam preparatory courses at Trinity offer a rigorous look at the many components and competencies that a human resources professional must manage in order to keep the organization in compliance with all of the legal and operational requirements,” Greene said. With the proper planning, Trinity’s MLS students can now earn their degree and be SHRM-certified by the time they graduate. The preparation courses will also be offered to Juris Doctorate students in the 2024–25 academic year and could potentially be offered as part of other Trinity programs in the future.
