Trinity International University is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. H. Wayne Johnson to the position of Provost. Johnson will begin his provost duties on July 1, having worked for the past five years as associate dean of Trinity Evangelical Divinity School and associate professor of Biblical and Pastoral Theology.
Reporting to the president, Johnson will provide overall leadership in the supervision, support and coordination of the academic deans; he will also supervise the head librarian, the director of athletics, and the executive director of the Center for Bioethics and Human Dignity (CBHD). In addition, Johnson will be tasked with integrating Trinity’s various academic centers, whether externally or internally funded, into the life and mission of the community.
Johnson brings a wealth of both pastoral and higher education experience to his new role. A graduate from Dartmouth College with a BA in Music (Voice) and Pre-Medical Studies as well as from TEDS with a Master of Divinity and a ThM in Biblical and Systematic Theology, Johnson received his PhD in Hermeneutics and New Testament from Westminster Theological Seminary in 1993. During his doctoral studies, he also served as the senior pastor of the Evangelical Free Church of West Haven, Conn., before moving to Singapore to join Singapore Bible College, first as professor and then as academic dean.
"I am delighted to be invited by President Perrin to work with him as provost of TIU," Johnson said. "These are challenging days for Christian higher education, and for this reason they must also be days of renewed commitment to our mission, renewed dependence on God and a willingness to be innovative."
After returning to Trinity in 2000, Johnson has provided leadership as dean of Chapel, dean of Students, and director of the Master of Divinity program prior to his current role as associate dean. His wide-ranging experience within the Trinity community as a student, faculty, and administrator will enable him to provide tremendous oversight to all of the academic programs and operations at Trinity.
"As a young seminary student, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School shaped me to love God’s Word and serve Christ's church as a pastor and theological educator. It has been a special privilege for me to serve the Lord at TIU over the last 20 years," Johnson said.
Johnson added that he has had the privilege of seeing God equipping men and women for roles of service, scholarship and leadership of all kinds each, "rejoicing to see their impact as they seek to be faithful partners in God’s redemptive work in the world."
"With God’s help," he said, "I look forward to working together with Trinity’s administrators, faculty, staff and students to pursue that mission together for the glory of God."
