Trinity International University granted honorary Doctor of Divinity degrees to EFCA president Kevin Kompelien and EFCA executive director of theology and credentialing Greg Strand during the 2019 EFCA One conference at The Compass Church in Naperville.
Evangelical Free Church of America pastors and lay leaders gather at this biennial conference in odd-numbered years. TIU is affiliated with the EFCA, serving as its only partner in higher education in the United States.
Kompelien became president of the EFCA in 2015. He also serves on the TIU Board of Regents and holds a Master of Divinity from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (1983).

In addition to Strand’s work with theological and credentialing matters within the EFCA, he serves on the Spiritual Heritage Committee and the Board of Ministerial Standing.
"Greg Strand has served for decades as a scholar-theologian in residence," Trinity president Nicholas Perrin said. "Likewise, Kevin Kompelien's years of leadership experience are probably tantamount to two terminal degrees. The granting of these doctorates could not be more deserved."
Awarding the degrees to Kompelien and Strand continues a Trinity tradition that includes similar presentations to key EFCA leaders such as Arnold T. Olson, Thor Madsen, and Bill Hamel.
The University also presented its EFCA Service Award to Quintin Stieff, lead pastor of the Valley Church in West Des Moines, Iowa. Stieff earned a Master of Divinity degree from TEDS in 1986, and serves on the Board of Regents.
“The Trinity community is truly thankful for its relationship with the EFCA and particularly for the support and encouragement that Kevin Kompelien, Quintin Stieff, and Greg Strand have offered the Trinity community in recent years,” TIU chancellor David S. Dockery said. “These recognitions are a small way for those of us at Trinity to express our gratitude to each one of these gifted leaders.”

Trinity traditionally hosts a dinner during the run of EFCA One. All three awards were made at the dinner on June 18 in nearby Woodridge. About 500 guests witnessed the awards and listened to an address from Perrin, who took his first opportunity to address a large EFCA audience as Trinity's 16th president.
