What is SHRM Certification?

SHARE:

Human resources (HR) professionals play a pivotal role in shaping organizational success. The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) offers two recognized certifications: SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) and SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP). These certifications serve as a benchmark for HR expertise.

Understanding SHRM Certification

SHRM certifications are designed to assess the knowledge and skills of HR professionals. Unlike HR certifications that focus solely on technical knowledge, SHRM’s approach integrates behavioral competencies with technical HR expertise, aligning with the SHRM Body of Applied Skills and Knowledge® (SHRM BASK®). This ensures that certified professionals are equipped to handle real-world HR challenges effectively.

SHRM-CP vs. SHRM-SCP: Key Differences

Certification Target Audience Focus Areas
SHRM-CP HR professionals performing operational HR duties Implementation of policies, day-to-day HR functions
SHRM-SCP HR professionals in strategic roles Developing HR strategies, leading HR functions, and aligning HR with organizational goals

The SHRM-CP is ideal for HR professionals who are involved in implementing policies and serving as the HR point of contact for staff. In contrast, the SHRM-SCP is tailored for senior HR professionals who develop strategies and lead the HR function.

Eligibility Criteria

Eligibility for SHRM certifications is based on a combination of education and HR-related work experience. For instance:

  • SHRM-CP: Individuals performing HR or HR-related duties or pursuing a career in Human Resources. Basic working knowledge of HR is recommended.
  • SHRM-SCP: Individuals with a work history of at least three years performing strategic-level HR or HR-related duties; or for SHRM-CP credential holders who have held the credential for at least three years and are working in, or transitioning to, a strategic-level role.

It’s important to note that SHRM does not mandate a specific degree or job title for eligibility. Instead, the focus is on the nature of HR-related work experience.

Exam Structure

Both SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP exams consist of 134 multiple-choice questions, divided into two types:

  • Knowledge-based questions: Assess understanding of factual information.
  • Situational judgment questions: Evaluate decision-making skills in real-life scenarios.

Candidates are allotted four hours to complete the exam, which is administered at Prometric test centers or via remote proctoring.

Recertification

SHRM-certified professionals must recertify every three years to maintain their credentials. Recertification can be achieved by: shrm.org/credentials/certification/certification-faqs

  • Earning 60 Professional Development Credits (PDCs): Engage in activities such as continuing education, work projects, or volunteer HR activities.
  • Retaking the certification exam: This option is available within the last year of the recertification cycle. shrm.org

It’s essential to track and submit PDCs through the SHRM certification portal before the certification expiration date. shrm.org/credentials/certification/recertification
