Of making many books there is no end, and much study is a weariness of the flesh.<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\"><sup><strong>[1]<\/strong><\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>When you come, bring the cloak that I left with Carpus at Troas, also the books, and above all the parchments.<a href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\"><sup><strong>[2]<\/strong><\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>There are worse crimes than burning books. One of them is not reading them.<a href=\"#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\"><sup><strong>[3]<\/strong><\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>A room without books is like a body without a soul.<a href=\"#_ftn4\" name=\"_ftnref4\"><sup><strong>[4]<\/strong><\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The practice and prudence of Public Legal Theology presupposes \u2013 and requires \u2013 knowing about more than \u201clegal doctrines.\u201d\u00a0 The Public Legal Theology enterprise must be situated in real reality, including humanity and culture.\u00a0 One way to do this well involves reading deeply and broadly.\u00a0 Here, I will share what that looks like in my role as Director of the CPLT.<\/p>\n<p>Recently in a past year, I read \u2013 and I mean <em>read<\/em>, not <em>heard<a href=\"#_ftn5\" name=\"_ftnref5\"><sup><strong>[5]<\/strong><\/sup><\/a><\/em> \u2013 about 50 books.\u00a0 Some were thick dense legal texts comprised of thousands of pages containing judicial ramblings.\u00a0 Others were \u201cmind candy\u201d providing sheer entertainment.\u00a0 Others provided worldview formation and theological rigor. I offer this glimpse at some of the books that recently impacted me.<\/p>\n<p>Note:\u00a0 A reading of the scriptures amply depicts God\u2019s actors being familiar with the ambient culture as well as with the culture\u2019s extant literature \u2013 from fiction to the philosophical:\u00a0 Solomon,<a href=\"#_ftn6\" name=\"_ftnref6\"><sup>[6]<\/sup><\/a> Daniel,<a href=\"#_ftn7\" name=\"_ftnref7\"><sup>[7]<\/sup><\/a> Paul,<a href=\"#_ftn8\" name=\"_ftnref8\"><sup>[8]<\/sup><\/a> John,<a href=\"#_ftn9\" name=\"_ftnref9\"><sup>[9]<\/sup><\/a> and Peter.<a href=\"#_ftn10\" name=\"_ftnref10\"><sup>[10]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 These scriptural examples inspire me to digest material &#8211; outside the scriptures &#8211; that pertain to \u201cseeking first the kingdom of God.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn11\" name=\"_ftnref11\"><sup>[11]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Afterall, \u201call truth is God\u2019s truth.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn12\" name=\"_ftnref12\"><sup>[12]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Recent Select Highlights<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Chapman &amp; McConnell, <em>Agreeing to Disagree &#8211; How the Establishment Clause Protects Religious Diversity and Freedom of Conscience<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 In an era of noisy rancor and divisiveness, this book, penned by preeminent constitutional (and Christian) scholars, explains how the constitution protects religious liberty as well as dissent in the public order.\u00a0 This was THE societal question presented to the budding church in the book of Acts:\u00a0 How does Christian obedience operate in the presence of pagan civil authorities?<\/p>\n<p>Far too often, Christians opt for a false binary, preferring \u201cpiety\u201d (just be personally holy and don\u2019t get involved) instead of \u201cpolitics\u201d (become a rabid activist that identifies God\u2019s Kingdom with partisanship) or vice versa.\u00a0 A legal framework actually exists which helps navigate this false dichotomy.\u00a0 And, this is not optional as Tom Wright recently noted; rather this is the very mission of God\u2019s people:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">The Judean and early Christian traditions were clear that God the Creator wanted his world to be run by human beings.\u00a0 This is part of what it means to be made in the divine image, to reflect God\u2019s wise authority into the world.\u00a0 <em>But the corollary is that rulers will then bear responsibility for their decisions and actions.<\/em><a href=\"#_ftn13\" name=\"_ftnref13\">[13]<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Godawa, <em>Cruel Logic<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 This book\u2019s genre is \u201ctheological thriller.\u201d\u00a0 The author, an award-winning screen writer and novelist (and friend), is steeped in cultural apologetics.<a href=\"#_ftn14\" name=\"_ftnref14\"><sup>[14]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Here, he presents the clash of worldviews in which the villain is a philosophy professor who presents his victims with an opportunity to explain why they should not be murdered \u2013 based on their own non-Christian worldviews.\u00a0 This is applied apologetics in living (and at times gory) color.<a href=\"#_ftn15\" name=\"_ftnref15\"><sup>[15]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Reilly, <em>Hate Crime Hoax &#8211; How the Left is Selling a Fake Race War<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 One of the casualties of rejecting the Biblical doctrine of creation is factions among people created in the image and likeness of God.\u00a0 Lazy and unserious men, often animated by animus, categorize humans based on ethnicity, kinship, skin pigmentation, or some other non-biblical criteria.<a href=\"#_ftn16\" name=\"_ftnref16\"><sup>[16]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The Left has taken this one step further under the influence of Critical Theory (wokeism) and weaponized these divisions \u2013 often with tragic consequences.<a href=\"#_ftn17\" name=\"_ftnref17\">[17]<\/a>\u00a0 This book demonstrates with fact after fact that much of the so-called \u201chate-crimes\u201d painted in headlines are simply false and lack factual support.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bahnsen, <em>Full Time &#8211;<\/em> <em>Work and the Meaning of Life<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 This book presents a robust, biblically faithful case for the goodness &#8211; and continuing necessity &#8211; of work and labor. Our work is not imposed because of the Fall. Rather, it\u2019s part and parcel of what it means to image the Creator God.\u00a0 Here, Bahnsen graciously shatters the well-intended, though erroneous, notions often advanced by the \u201cfaith\/work\u201d industry.<a href=\"#_ftn18\" name=\"_ftnref18\"><sup>[18]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Bigger, <em>Colonialism &#8211; A Moral Reckoning<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 Critics of the Christian faith lived publicly often sling the notion of \u201ccolonialism\u201d against the West.\u00a0 This is a favorite barb of the Left, notwithstanding that the United States never colonized any land or nation.<a href=\"#_ftn19\" name=\"_ftnref19\"><sup>[19]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 With nuance and realism Bigger tells the real story of the British Colonial era \u2013 warts and all.\u00a0 His conclusion clashes with what\u2019s commonly peddled today by political pundits.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wright and Bird, <em>Jesus and the Powers<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 A Brit and an Aussie walk into a bar . . . in this case we see them engage in fresh ways examining what Jesus, the Ascended King of kings and Lord of lords, means with respect to \u201cearthy\u201d powers and authorities.\u00a0 If Jesus has \u201call authority,\u201d what does Caesar have?\u00a0 Should Christians unflinchingly obey worldly political powers?\u00a0 What about resisting political bullies?\u00a0 How may Christians fruitfully and faithfully navigate between totalitarian tyrants and dysfunctional democracies?\u00a0 I have taught this book as part of Trinity\u2019s unique Pro Bono Reading curriculum.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Shrier, <em>Bad Therapy:<\/em>\u00a0 <em>Why Kids Aren\u2019t Growing Up<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 This author, though a non-Christian, had previously shown that the emperors leading the gender transition industrial complex have no clothes.<a href=\"#_ftn20\" name=\"_ftnref20\"><sup>[20]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 With this volume, she exposes the deep harm caused by counseling and adjacent therapies which drug our children or malform them using \u201cSocial Emotional Learning\u201d and \u201cgentle parenting.\u201d\u00a0 This book presents a blunt, eye-opening, well-researched, yet popular presentation, which every parent should read.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Schaeffer, <em>A Christian Manifesto<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 This classic text \u201cholds up\u201d after 40+ years \u2013 rereading it confirmed the author\u2019s prescience \u2013 perhaps the most important observation he makes is noting that the evangelical churches for the past century \u201chave seen things in bits and pieces instead of totals.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn21\" name=\"_ftnref21\"><sup>[21]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 It\u2019s still a problem today and another reason a coherent theory of Public Legal Theology has become a necessity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Vallier, <em>All the Kingdoms of the World<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em>&#8211; On Radical Alternatives to Liberalism <\/em><\/strong>\u2013 In the past few years, the Christian-influenced political theory of Classical Liberalism \u2013 the philosophical basis animating American constitutionalism &#8211; has become a favorite pinata of the New Right.\u00a0 We have seen a renewed interest in Catholic Integralism as well as so-called Christian Nationalism \u2013 both of which have become quite cozy with, not suspicious of, State power.\u00a0 Vallier outlines a cogent case for Integralism, setting forth its best-case scenario from history and the Catholic encyclicals.\u00a0 Then, he systematically dismantles it as a viable system.\u00a0 His critiques work equally well against the New Right\u2019s Christian Nationalism.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rosen, <em>The Extinction of Experience &#8211; Being Human in a Disembodied World<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 Rosen ponders how life spent mediated online or otherwise impacts humanity.\u00a0 Her treatment ranges wide and far, addressing patience, virtual tourism, AI, GPS reliance, facial proximity or the lack thereof, empathy, et al.\u00a0 While she seems to rely on Darwinian conceptions at some points, the questions she asks and matches to extant data remain profound.\u00a0 Bottom line:\u00a0 living in an increasingly disembodied way smacks of Gnosticism, whether intended or not.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wright, <em>The Challenge of Acts \u2013 Rediscovering What the Church Was and Is<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 This short work contains great depth.\u00a0 This is not a run-of-the-mill \u201ccommentary,\u201d nor does it attempt to be one.\u00a0 Rather, Wright provides a grand overview of what the church is and how the story of Jesus, the Messiah, continues following His Ascension.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Brendsel, <em>Answering Speech \u2013 The Life of Prayer as Responses to God<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 Prayer can be difficult or non-existent.\u00a0 This work comes highly recommended by people I respect, including Myron Steeves, Dean Emeritus for Trinity Law School.\u00a0 Brendsel addresses prayer as speech that answers God &#8211; fascinating.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Trueman, <em>To Change All Worlds \u2013 Critical Theory from Marx to Marcuse<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 Trueman\u2019s works are as readable as they are incisive.\u00a0 This new work provides an historical lineage for Critical Theory, telling the story through its cultural conductors, theorists, and champions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Presley, <em>Cultural Sanctification \u2013 Engaging the World like the Early Church<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 This book carefully considers how the early church engaged the culture and the extant political powers \u2013 what can the church today learn from those early disciples who literally \u201cturned the world upside down\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn22\" name=\"_ftnref22\"><sup>[22]<\/sup><\/a> \u2013 neither falling prey to the Scylla of pietism, nor the Charybdis of partisan politics?\u00a0 This treatment chronicles the practice of public legal theology \u201cout of the gates\u201d of early Christianity.\u00a0 I have also enjoyed teaching this work in a Trinity Pro Bono reading class \u2013 the students greatly appreciated the insights of this treatment.<\/p>\n<p>The following books \u2013 along with probably 90 others in the stack \u2013 will likely be \u201cfirst in line\u201d for my study in coming weeks.\u00a0 I have \u201cpreviewed them\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn23\" name=\"_ftnref23\"><sup>[23]<\/sup><\/a> and anticipate great benefit considering their perspectives and arguments:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Poythress, <em>Making Sense of Man \u2013 Using Biblical Perspectives to Develop a Theology of Humanity<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 Professor Poythress utilizes the tri-perspectival approach to develop and elucidate a theology of humanity.<a href=\"#_ftn24\" name=\"_ftnref24\"><sup>[24]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Reading Poythress is always like consuming a great feast: nutritious, delicious, beautiful, memorable, diverse, and satiating.\u00a0 And anthropology is becoming increasingly crucial as we assess, for example, AI for both culture and pedagogy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hunter, <em>Democracy and Solidarity:\u00a0 On the Cultural Roots of America\u2019s Political Crisis<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 Hunter is a leader in understanding and explaining how cultures change \u2013 spoiler alert:\u00a0 it\u2019s not by grass root activism \u2013 Hunter here turns his thinking to America\u2019s torn social fabric \u2013 its causes and possible solutions.<\/p>\n<p>May this Fall provide ample time to consider and reflect with books \u2013 starting, of course, with THE book, the Holy Bible.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"#_ftnref1\" name=\"_ftn1\">[1]<\/a> Eccel. 12:12<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#_ftnref2\" name=\"_ftn2\">[2]<\/a> 2 Tim. 4:13<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#_ftnref3\" name=\"_ftn3\">[3]<\/a> Joseph Brosky, <a href=\"https:\/\/prowritingaid.com\/quotes-about-reading\">https:\/\/prowritingaid.com\/quotes-about-reading<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#_ftnref4\" name=\"_ftn4\">[4]<\/a> Marcus Tullius Ciero, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hindustantimes.com\/lifestyle\/festivals\/happy-world-book-day-2024-30-powerful-quotes-by-renowned-authors-to-celebrate-world-book-and-copyright-day-101713800146897.html#:~:text=%22A%20room%20without%20books%20is%20like%20a,a%20uniquely%20portable%20magic.%22%20%2D%20Stephen%20King\">https:\/\/www.hindustantimes.com\/lifestyle\/festivals\/happy-world-book-day-2024-30-powerful-quotes-by-renowned-authors-to-celebrate-world-book-and-copyright-day-101713800146897.html#:~:text=%22A%20room%20without%20books%20is%20like%20a,a%20uniquely%20portable%20magic.%22%20%2D%20Stephen%20King<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#_ftnref5\" name=\"_ftn5\">[5]<\/a> For those interested in the debate between reading and listening, consider Jessica Schrader, <em>Why Listening to a Book Is Not the Same as Reading It \u2013 It\u2019s Better.\u00a0 But only in certain cases, <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/friendly-interest\/201812\/why-listening-book-is-not-the-same-reading-it\">https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/friendly-interest\/201812\/why-listening-book-is-not-the-same-reading-it<\/a> &#8211; the books I consume require reading and rereading and outlining, and indexing, which cannot be efficiently accomplished by listening.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#_ftnref6\" name=\"_ftn6\">[6]<\/a> 1 Kings 4:29-34 describes the breadth and depth of Solomon\u2019s learning coupled with wisdom.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#_ftnref7\" name=\"_ftn7\">[7]<\/a> Dan. 1:4 reflects formation and education in the ways of Babylon by the Jewish captives.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#_ftnref8\" name=\"_ftn8\">[8]<\/a> Acts 17 and Titus 1:12, Paul\u2019s teaching reflects Greek philosophical categories as well as familiarity with its poets.\u00a0 Consider also his contrasting the Christian faith with Greek and Jewish musings in 1 Cor. 1:22<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#_ftnref9\" name=\"_ftn9\">[9]<\/a> John\u2019s Gospel commences with a parallel to Genesis 1 (the Hebrew torah) using Greek philosophical terms, like <em>logos, <\/em>but in a subversive way.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#_ftnref10\" name=\"_ftn10\">[10]<\/a> In his Pentecost address, Peter quotes the Hebrew scriptures extensively (Ps. 16, 110, Joel 2) and cites a non-biblical proverb elsewhere in 2 Peter 2:22b<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#_ftnref11\" name=\"_ftn11\">[11]<\/a> Matt. 6:33<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#_ftnref12\" name=\"_ftn12\">[12]<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/learn.ligonier.org\/articles\/all-truth-gods-truth-sproul\">https:\/\/learn.ligonier.org\/articles\/all-truth-gods-truth-sproul<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#_ftnref13\" name=\"_ftn13\">[13]<\/a> N.T.
