John Szott: A Veteran’s Path to Becoming a Pastor-Theologian
Oct 2, 2024
Throughout your education, you probably have spent time reading and analyzing classic literature like the works of Shakespeare or Brontë. For some, learning how to deeply study and understand literature may inspire you to study the Bible with the same level of hermeneutical intensity, leading you to consider seminary.
In seminary, you wrestle with the most essential topics of faith, the reliability of Scripture, the nature of God, and humanity’s purpose on earth. Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (TEDS) is an institution committed to academic rigor, orthodoxy, and practical training, preparing you for an array of ministry vocations. Additionally, the professors at TEDS are leaders in their fields, who will help you gain a deeper understanding of Scripture and theology.
While TEDS is a denominational seminary (EFCA), students come from various backgrounds and perspectives, enriching the school with theological and cultural diversity. Regardless of your viewpoints, the professors from a variety of traditions at TEDS are committed to the essential doctrines of faith, linking arms with brothers and sisters across the spectrum of evangelical Christianity.
When you study at TEDS, you experience the gift of a culturally diverse student body. Over thirty percent of the students are international students, bringing unique perspectives and experiences into the classroom. While some of these international students intend to stay in the States after graduation, many plan to return and minister in their home countries.
This even includes countries where practicing Christianity is extremely countercultural or dangerous. Whether the international students decide to minister at churches in the States or take the gospel to the ends of the earth, it is encouraging to meet Christians from all over the world and to witness the pervasive influence of the kingdom of God.
If you have expressed a desire to study at a Christian seminary or university, you may have been warned by well-meaning people about the dangers of theological education. These people may be concerned that seminary fills your head with knowledge but makes your heart cold and devoid of love. While these warnings are often exaggerated, many students fear what will happen to their souls in seminary.
To counteract the very real temptations of pride and apathy, TEDS emphasizes growth in holiness as well as growth in knowledge through chapel services, spiritual formation groups, and encouraging local church involvement. As a TEDS student, you will grow in your understanding of God and your love for Him.
By studying at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, you will be prepared for decades of faithful ministry. Our world-class faculty is committed to providing students with theological education that’s accessible, affordable, and applicable.
Taking the time to study the Scriptures carefully and exposing yourself to the broader Christian tradition, you’ll be strengthened to serve in whatever ministry the Lord leads you to. Whether you serve in pastoral, academic, counseling, or chaplaincy work, you’ll draw back on your education from TEDS for decades to come.
