Evangelical Theological Society

Welcome to the 74th Annual Meeting of the Evangelical Theological Society

The first meeting of ETS was held with some 60 scholars in December 1949 at the downtown Y.M.C.A. in Cincinnati, Ohio. This was a signal event in the history of American Christianity as Bible-believing scholars from a variety of institutions and denominations came together to form a new association “to foster conservative biblical scholarship by providing a medium for the oral exchange and written expression of thought and research in the general !eld of the theological disciplines as centered in the Scriptures.” Since that humble beginning, God has continued to bless the work of this Society far beyond, I dare say, the expectations of those who launched this effort nearly 75 years ago.

The theme of each of the ETS annual meetings is chosen several years in advance. This year’s theme is Holiness. In the Bible, holiness is both an attribute of God and the divinely-mandated requirement for all of God’s people, “Ye shall be holy; for I am holy” (Lev. 11:44; 1 Peter 1:16). We shall explore this wondrously rich biblical theme in a variety of sessions and presentations throughout the annual meeting. We have invited three outstanding scholars to help us focus our attention on the major implications of holiness throughout the Bible and in our Christian life. This year’s plenary speakers are:

John Oswalt – Asbury Theological Seminary “Holiness: The Goal of Human Life”

Michael Haykin – The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary “‘War with the hydra of Antinomianism’: The Baptist Tradition and the Pursuit of Holiness in the Long Eighteenth Century”

Han-luen Kantzer Komline – Western Theological Seminary (Holland, Michigan) “Holiness and the Christian Life: An Augustinian Perspective”

As the Society has grown in membership, so have the number of submissions to present papers. This is an encouraging development, and we are grateful for all members who have made proposals. While not all of these could be accepted you will !nd in this program an impressive number of perspectives exploring the biblical call to holiness. One of the highlights of each annual meeting is the presidential address and we all look forward eagerly to this year’s presentation by our ETS president, Dr. D.A. Carson, “Trishagion: Foundation for Christian Mission.”

The work of ETS involves much labor by many people. I am especially grateful for our Executive Committee, our hard-working Program Committee, and numerous volunteers who contribute so much to the success of our work. We are blessed to have Ken Magnuson as our Executive Director, assisted so well by our Meeting Planner, Bonnie Thigpen.

May the Lord bless us and cause his face to shine upon us as we come together in Denver for this annual meeting.

Pro Christo et ecclesia!
