Cypress Bible Church (https://www.cypressbible.org) is seeking a full-time Worship Pastor.
Top 5 Qualifications
1. Doctrinal Alignment – In full agreement with CBC’s doctrinal statement and teaching positions.
2. Elder qualified – Must be a man of unquestionable moral character, “above reproach”, who meets the Biblical qualifications of Elder as set forth in 1 Timothy 3, Titus 1, and 1 Peter 5.
3. Theologically Trained – Must have a degree from a reputable seminary or Bible college that aligns theologically and doctrinally with CBC.
4. Follows the Regulative Principle of Worship – Has the conviction that God is to be worshiped in the manner God has commanded us in His Word.
The Regulative Principle of Worship Explained
Does not prohibit the use of instruments nor the use of multiple vocalists.
Does not limit the style of music: the singing of psalms, hymns, and contemporary songs are encouraged.
Does limit corporate singing to what the Bible clearly teaches about God and his work in redemptive history.
Does limit the various elements of liturgy to what the Bible reveals which are:
The call to worship (Ps. 96:1-13; 105:1-15; 106:1, 47-48), reading of Scripture (1 Tim. 4:13), prayer (Matt. 21:13; 1 Tim. 2:1-3, 8), singing of Scripture (Eph. 5:19; Col. 3:16), the proclamation of Scripture, (Ex. 24:7; Neh. 8:7-8; Col. 4:16; 1 Tim. 4:13), and the celebration of the two ordinances of the church: baptism (Acts 2:41; 1 Pet. 3:21-22) and the Lord’s table (Matt. 26:26-29; Mark 14:11-15; Luke 22:15-20; 1 Cor. 11:17-34).
5. Pastoral – Through song, prayer, and the ordinances, he is to publicly proclaim to and with the congregation the character and works of the triune God of Scripture, and he is to develop the character and talents of the team he leads.
Characteristics of the Ideal Candidate
Must be elder qualified according to the scriptural qualifications specified in 1 Timothy 3 and Titus 2.
An authentic relationship with Jesus and a desire to follow Him in every aspect of life.
Agreement with the philosophy of ministry developed by the elders.
A clear calling to worship ministry.
An agreement with the beliefs, purpose, and core values of the church.
An attitude of servant leadership and a relational aptitude that evidences a genuine love for people, flexibility, and an appreciation of differences.
A shepherd’s heart that creates a connection with the body. Exudes humility, sensitivity, encouragement, and brokenness in joining the body in worship.
A humble, teachable spirit that is responsive, open to constructive evaluation, and eager to learn.
An ability to recruit, organize, and develop leaders.
An aptitude to organize systems, work with technology, plan, budget, and manage events and projects.
A self-starting attitude that identifies, strategizes, and implements what needs to be done.
An aptitude for addressing and resolving conflict.
A keen ability to self-assess.
An ability to engage God’s Word through teaching in an effective, transformational manner..
Responsibilities for Shepherding of Worship Ministry
Develop a worship team to assist in carrying out the church’s vision.
Schedule and coordinate musicians and team members.
Love, shepherd, and guide the worship team.
Lead worship about 4 out of 5 Sundays and help other worship leaders develop in their gifting when not leading.
Lead weekly rehearsals with the worship team to prepare and equip for worship.
Schedule and lead music ministry meetings as needed (both with other worship leaders and musicians).
Set vision and direction for the overall worship ministry of the church and ensure that vision is consistently and constantly communicated.
Develop procedures and processes and document them in a way that is easily accessible to the team.
Examine, explore, and evaluate all existing worship ministries from a theological and practical perspective.
Organize a quarterly worship evening.
Work closely with the pastors who teach to create an order of worship, flow, and rhythm to the Sunday morning worship. Protect the service from creep and invasion of non-essentials.
Assist with improving A/V, creative arts, and other service elements that would assist worship and pointing people to Jesus.
Identify and train both worship leaders and musicians.
Help other ministries improve their worship and alignment with the main service.
Supervise the worship staff.
Participate in staff meetings and collaborate with all ministry areas.
Aspirational
As time allows, create worship resources for the broader church. This could include songwriting, hosting a worship conference, writing, etc.
Pulpit supply as needed or planned.
Occasional classes and ministry coverage.
Expectations and Evaluation
The Worship Pastor will regularly attend Sunday morning worship services as well as priority events (baptism services, annual meeting, Christmas Eve, etc.). A review of the responsibilities and performance of this position will occur annually by the lead pastor and monthly for the first six months. This job does not carry with it the responsibility of serving as an elder; however, the elders will frequently ask for the Worship Pastor to attend part or all of the elder meetings depending on the agenda. This is to both help with communication and relationship building and also to gain the perspective of the worship pastor on key issues.
Experience and Education
3 years of experience (or equivalent)
An undergraduate degree or higher in a ministry-related field of study.
