Reporting of Crime and University Response

To help provide a secure and safe environment, all members of the university and visitors are expected, requested and encouraged to report any criminal activity or emergency that they observe. Reporting may be accomplished by contacting Campus Safety & Security Services directly or requesting assistance from a university office in contacting Campus Safety & Security Services to report a crime or emergency. Campus Safety & Security Services may be contacted directly from any campus phone by either pressing the button marked "SECURITY" on a room or office phone or by dialing 6400 from a courtesy phone. Individuals may also contact Campus Safety & Security Services immediately through the use of one of the "emergency blue phones" located on campus. Anonymous reports may also be made through the Security website: www.tiu.edu/tiu/security or through the internal MyTrinity network. In the event of a fire emergency any fire alarm pull station may be tripped in the building. Campus Safety & Security Services is hardwired into each alarm system and is automatically notified of the activation of the alarm. Deerfield PD Dispatch is hardwired as well to each alarm system and the Fire Department is immediately notified. In the event of a life or death emergency, individuals are encouraged to contact 911 directly by dialing 9-911 from any campus phone. Campus Safety & Security Services is immediately notified of any 911 calls made through the campus phone system and the number and location of origin. Campus Safety & Security Services still request that another individual notify Security at 6400 of the situation to ensure a quick response. Campus Safety & Security Services Personnel are available 24 hours a day by stopping at the Gatehouse. If Security personnel are out they may be reached immediately by lifting the receiver of the phone located next to the door.

Campus Safety & Security Services will respond as quickly as possible to every report of a crime or emergency. Response time may be affected by the number and location of available personnel and involvement at the time a report is received, with other incidents which must be judged by the Shift Supervisor to be of greater or lesser importance. Action on a report may also involve response by personnel: from Health Services or external ambulance in cases possibly requiring medical treatment; from the Counseling Center in cases possibly involving sexual assault or psychological issues; from Student Affairs in cases involving violations of University regulations and policies; or from outside police or other agencies when necessary.

Security Officers are trained to observe and report. Upon receipt of a call, officers are dispatched to the site of the report to discern the problem and render assistance. A written report is made of each incident and, if needed, follow-up is conducted. Student Affairs staff work closely with Security officers in responding to serious incidents and police are notified when warranted or someone involved wishes to file a police report. Incident reports are filed by Campus Safety & Security Services and Student Affairs.

In the event of extreme emergencies, e.g. fire, murder, bomb threat, etc., the university safety committee (which involves a cross-section of faculty, staff and student representatives who will regularly meet to review and deal with safety issues on campus from different perspectives.) has developed an emergency manual. Copies of this manual are available for review in every office on campus. The safety committee has also developed an Emergency Response Plan, with the assistance of Bannockburn Police Department, Deerfield-Bannockburn Fire Department and outside consultants. This plan establishes a clear chain of command, as well as the necessary resources and responses to emergencies at all levels.

Campus Safety & Security Services encourages accurate and prompt reporting of all crimes to Campus Safety & Security Services, Student Affairs and the Bannockburn Police Department. Currently no procedures are in place to report crimes on a voluntary, confidential basis for inclusion in the annual disclosure of crime statistics. No procedures are in place to encourage pastoral and professional counselors to inform clients they are counseling of any procedures to report crimes on a voluntary, confidential basis for inclusion in the report.
