Fire Safety Tips

Smoke Detectors Save Lives! Make sure the smoke detector in your apartment or dorm room has a fresh battery in it. Test it by pushing the button to make sure it beeps. If you need a fresh battery or help distinguishing the local battery powered detector from the system detector, contact the Security Office.

Test your smoke detectors monthly, and install new batteries twice a year. If your battery "chirps," you need a new battery.

If the alarm in your building sounds, evacuate! Remember to close the door as you leave. Do not exit into a hallway full of smoke or fire. Use another exit, or go to the balcony.

Do not delay! If you smell smoke or suspect fire, evacuate and call Security and 911 immediately from a neighbor's phone.

Do not leave food cooking on the stove unattended. Stay in the kitchen while food is cooking. If a pan catches fire, put a lid on it and turn off the oven or stove.

Learn how to use the fire extinguisher located in your building for small fires. Remember the acronym, PASS. PULL the pin. AIM the nozzle. SQUEEZE the handle, and SWEEP at the base of the fire.
