Trinity Evangelical Divinity School
The Master of Arts (Religion) (MAR) degree is a general theological
studies program. Trinity's MAR program draws from the breadth
of the theological disciplines to provide a basic foundation,
then gives flexible opportunity for participants to focus
a significant number of elective hours in their areas of interest.
The MAR degree is useful for those already in ministry, as
well as those seeking a seminary education who are unable
to leave their place of ministry or employment and relocate
to a residential setting.
The MAR program provides a well-structured combination of
Bible, theology, and practical ministry courses designed to
prepare the student for effectual ministry in a variety of
settings ranging from the local church to local and international
ministries and missions. For those individuals pursuing a
Master of Divinity degree at the Deerfield campus, this program
constitutes approximately one-half of the degree work required.
MAR Concentrations
You can choose from a Practical Theology or Pastoral Counseling
concentration in order to fulfill your elective course requirements.
As another option, you may take a combination of elective
courses from both concentration areas.
Practical Theology
The Practical Theology concentration focuses students on
developing an educational community where together they can
work out God's calling on their lives by:
- equipping for the ministries of preaching, shepherding,
and overseeing
- integrating life and doctrine in pursuit of godliness
as it relates to Christian character and ministry
- embracing a proper biblical and theological orientation
to the church and world
Courses are offered in homiletics (preaching) and pastoral
theology. Pastoral theology courses focus on a variety of
ministry areas, such as education, counseling, church planting,
administration, urban evangelism, discipleship, worship, ethnicity,
and personal spiritual formation.
Pastoral Counseling
The Pastoral Counseling concentration is designed to enable
students to better understand the nature and needs of human
beings and to appreciate the differences between people. The
program accentuates awareness of the methods and conclusions
of psychology as applied to the work of the church and addresses
areas of alleged conflict between the Bible and psychology.
The development of skills in counseling and interpersonal
relationships is heavily emphasized.
Divinity Program Format
Fall and Spring semester courses meet once a week on a Monday,
Tuesday or Thursday night for 16 weeks. Weekend classes are
