Guide to Using Reference Types

Reference Type - describes the type of material you are citing.  Examples include: book, journal, electronic journal, and dissertation.

When importing records from databases RefWorks will pick a reference type based on the information sent by the database (i.e. TrinCat, WorldCat, ATLA, etc.)

Generally RefWorks will pick either book, journal, or book chapter.  If you are using a different Reference Type you will need to manually edit the Reference Type in the Citation Record.  

To do this:

  1. Click on the word edit in the Citation list.
  2. Click on the down arrow next to "Ref Type."
  3. Choose a Reference Type from the list.

Examples of what Reference Type you should use for your citation type and the field you will need to have filled out:
