Master of Arts (Intercultural Studies) (MA/ICS)

The MA/ICS was recently redesigned to provide an integrated, flexible program. The new MA/ICS residency can be completed in three three-week summer sessions, a single semester, or through modular courses.

The program is flexible because it is founded upon mentoring. Field missionaries, urban ministers, second career ministers and missionaries, mission pastors, and students with strong Bible backgrounds seeking advanced studies in culture, research, and cross-cultural ministry will find the program well suited for their schedules and calling.

The MA/ICS prepares students to embark on the task of Christian mission, or for experienced missionaries wanting to better integrate the discipline of missiology with the practice of missions. The program will help the student to better understand Scripture with the aim of communicating the Gospel through bridging cultures at home and abroad. The student will be better equipped to contribute to the development of national leadership in churches and church-related institutions. This program can serve as continuing education for experienced missionaries, to prepare practitioners and teachers of missions, for mission pastors and those who lead and train short-term missions. The program, while global in its focus, will also provide useful skills for those exploring issues of the Gospel and culture in Western contexts.

The God-given task of world mission has never been more necessary and challenging than as we face the twenty-first century. Opportunity and opposition are to be found side by side in all parts of the world. The missionary enterprise requires the best the church can offer: dedicated men and women who are spiritually and academically prepared to serve the Lord in any part of his harvest field.

Courses in mission and evangelism are designed to lead the students into mature understanding of world mission and the communication of personal faith as necessary corollaries of biblical Christianity. Courses cover the broad range of interdisciplinary concerns that assist students in preparation for global missionary service, issues unique to local or regional cross-cultural service or in the classrooms of higher education institutions, and the meaning and methods of personal evangelism.

“We are not just learning about counseling on an intellectual level; the program is really experience- oriented.”
