EM 5000  Educational Ministry in the Local Church

Course Description

An introductory course on the Christian education program of the local church, with special emphasis on philosophy of ministry, Bible teaching skills, guidelines for programming, and understanding ministry objectives.
     OR
An introduction to educational processes and their integration into a comprehensive philosophy and strategy of local church ministry. Special attention will be given to leadership, administration, organizational development, human development, and learning theory as they inform teaching ministry. Fundamental issues of age-group ministries will be covered by Educational Ministries faculty. This course is designed for students in the MDiv program (not the MA in Educational Ministries program). Three hours.

Course Objectives

At the end of this course, the student should be able to:

  1. State features of three approaches to spiritual development;

  2. Explain how human and faith development should shape age group ministries in local church programming;

  3. Use principles of cultural interpretation to shape discipleship ministries;

  4. Utilize basic principles and practices of teaching in a discipleship setting;

  5. Demonstrate a knowledge of how to design a discipleship system for a target audience;

  6. Apply biblical principles of leadership and management in local church Christian education;

  7. Explain the contribution of theology, history, and philosophy to discipleship ministries.

EM 5415  Educational Theory in Historical and Cultural Context

Course Description

A study of key persons in the development of philosophy and theology of education with a particular focus on their historical and cultural contexts. An analytical model for analysis of a philosophy and strategy of ministry will be used as a template for analyzing the ministry emphases of these key figures in the history of Christian education to inform contemporary ministry practice. A special focus will be on the normative ends of educational ministry. Two or three hours.

EM 5710   Biblical Fidelity in Educational Ministry

Course Description

A biblical theology approach to the development of educationally significant ideas in Scripture undergirds this course. Special attention will be given to literary genres of the Bible, hermeneutical principles, and Bible study methods. Students will be given the opportunity to hone communication skills in presenting biblical material. Two or three hours.

EM 5210   Christian Leadership

Course Description

An examination of the role and function of leadership in a Christian context. Biblical foundations, organizational development, leadership styles, strategic planning, evaluation, spiritual renewal and other topics are studied from the perspective of the church and other Christian organizations.

Course Objectives

As a result of this course the student will:

  1. Discover and use management literature to gain perspective on leadership/ management related challenges;

  2. Explain a normal management cycle;

  3. Utilize ministry vision to shape ministry decisions;

  4. Utilize pastoral principles in helping colleagues achieve ministry goals;

  5. Anticipate and manage problems common to Christian leadership;

  6. Identify relevant and strategic factors in dealing with ministry objectives.
