Employment for International Students

International students are allowed to work up to 20 hours per week during the school year (or 40 hours per week during holidays and summer vacation) as long as the job is on campus.  However, these types of jobs will only provide a small percentage of the funds needed to cover your expenses.

There are only two off campus employment options permitted by the United States governement for F-1 students.

  1. Optional Practical Training - Students may apply for permission to work and be paid in an area that is closely related to their program of study.  This work functions like an internship.  A student must have been in legal student status for nine (9) consecutive months before being eligible.  It is limited to twelve (12) months of full-time or part-time training.
  2. Curricular Practical Training - Students may apply for permission for this type of employment if they are getting school credit for their work.

For more information about these options, please contact iso@tiu.edu.

Please note:  spouses on F-2 visas are not allowed to work on or off campus.
