Local Job Resources
You may be wondering how feasible it is to work off-campus while taking classes at Trinity. Many TEDS students do work off-campus during their program, and good planning can help ensure that you will get the most out of your Trinity experience while balancing your responsibilities as a student with your work schedule.
Where to Look for Job Postings:
- Bulletin boards in the library and chapel building.
- Trinity College's Career Services has listings of positions and they schedule off-campus job fairs, usually on the first day of classes each year.
- Visit Trinity eclassifieds.
Frequently Asked Questions:
- Where are students employed? Students are employed in a variety of capacities in Lake County. The most common employers are coffee shops, ministries, window washing companies, and bookstores in the Northwest suburbs.
- How long does it take to find work? Although not everyone finds work that pays well and fits with their schedule, students who find work off-campus typically do so in less than two weeks after they begin looking. It is generally easy to find work off campus if you have time and transportation.
- How much do most students work? This varies considerably from student to student. The vast majority of full-time students who work off-campus are employed on a part-time basis.
- What prevents students from finding off-campus employment? Most obstacles to off-campus employment are the result of time constraints or lack of transportation, not a scarcity of employment opportunities. It is not advisable for students to pursue off-campus employment if they do not have the time and transportation necessary.
Helpful Tips from Current Students:
- While it may be helpful to look into employment opportunities before moving to the Chicagoland area, it is often a good idea to wait to look for employment until you have been in class for a few weeks so that you know how demanding graduate school can be.
- Look for a position that does not require you to amend your course schedule. Fitting your course schedule into your work schedule can make you feel like your job is taking precedence over your responsibilities as a student. This can negatively affect the Trinity experience.
- In Lake County, it is especially helpful to work close to your home. Commuting short distances can take a long time because of traffic.
- Trinity students have a reputation for having a good work ethic and being helpful. This often helps students get hired, but it is a reputation that must be lived up to.
