Christian Ministries Senior Research Paper Abstract
The Relationship Between Youth and the Church
By Aaron James McMahon
This up and coming generation can be defined as the ‘Mosaic' generation. The Mosaic generation is defined as such because their thinking is nonlinear, their values and beliefs are the result of a pick and choose lifestyle, and their spirituality is the result of a blend of different religious views and practices (Barna 17, 2001). How does youth culture factor in for a youth ministry when attempting to reach this ‘Mosaic' generation? What role should adults play in a youth ministry? How do youth fit into the larger body of the Church? The answers to these questions can be found in some foundational principles every youth ministry should adhere to. These principles are the value of youth within the "body of Christ," the ministry of relevance, and the need for adults in youth ministry. Having these principles as the foundation for ministry to youth should cause the church to: take responsibility for the youth, have an increased focus on evangelism, have a focus on discipleship, and have a realization of the need to minister to the families of youth.
