TIU Women's Soccer News 2003November 18, 2003Despite the loss to Robert Morris, TIU's season has not ended. On Monday, the squad received an at-large bid to participate in the NCCAA Cup in Kissimmee, FL where they will face Dallas Baptist at 2:00 EST in the first round on Friday, Nov. 21st. The tournament will run through Monday, Nov. 24th with the team playing 3 games. Women's Soccer placed 4 members on the NCCAA North Central All-Region Team. They are Heather Ellis, Jessica Bents, Stephanie Frey and Heather Scherrer, with Jessica Bents named as the Player of the Year and Patrick Gilliam as Coach of the Year. November 15, 2003TIU traveled to Des Moines, IA to participate as the #2 seed in the NAIA Region VII Tournament on Friday, Nov. 14th and Saturday, Nov. 15th. On Friday, they faced William Penn University who defeated St. Ambrose 3-2 in a first round match. In a tough semifinal round, Cori Schwarz netted the only goal of the match and Trinity earned a berth in the Championship game against CCAC rival Robert Morris with a NAIA National Tournament automatic bid on the line. The first half would be played fairly evenly as the teams entered halftime tied at 0-0. About 5 minutes into the second half, Robert Morris scored the only goal of the match and ended TIU's 14 game win streak and hopes of going to Santa Barbara, CA for Nationals. The weekends results moved the Trojan's overall record to 18-6. November 8, 2003TIU wrapped up the CCAC Tournament with a 5-0 victory over Olivet Nazarene University in the Championship game on Schartner Field Saturday. The win improves the Trojans record to 17-5 overall as they claim their 13th win in a row and qualifies them automatically for the NAIA Region VII Tournament hosted by Grand View College in Des Moines, IA on Friday, Nov. 14th and Saturday, Nov. 15th. They received the #2 seed behind host Grand View and will face the winner of the game between William Penn and St. Ambrose. That game is being played on Tuesday, Nov. 11th. The winner of the Regional Tournament automatically qualifies for the NAIA National Tournament in Santa Barbara, CA. November 1, 2003TIU won its 11th consecutive game with a 2-1 victory over Judson in the quarterfinals of the CCAC post-season tournament. Steph Frey and Charise McAllister each scored for the Trojans. The win pushes the team's record to 15-5 overall and 8-1 in conference. They will host St. Xavier in CCAC semifinal action on Wednesday, Nov. 5 at 1:00 pm on Schartner Field. Congrats to Steph Frey, Jess Bents and Heather Ellis for making 1st Team All-CCAC and Jill Barre for being named to the Honorable Mention squad. October 29, 2003TIU ended its regular season with a 6-0 victory over North Central College. Steph Frey and Katelyn Keckeisen each scored 2 goals, while Val Feuling netted one. The Trojans finished with a 14-5 record overall and 8-1 in conference. They begin post-season play this Saturday, Nov. 1, at 11:00 am when they host Judson College on Schartner Field in the quarterfinal round of the CCAC tournament. October 25, 2003Women's Soccer gained another win this weekend over a CCAC opponent. On Saturday, the women's soccer team honored 10 seniors as they hosted St. Xavier for their last CCAC regular season game. TIU came away with a 1-0 victory on Ashleigh Dellos' goal which gave the Trojans their 9th win in a row. The Trojans end their regular season on Wednesday (10/29) at North Central College for a 5:00 pm game time. TIU will begin post-season play on Saturday (11/1) at 11:00 am when they host Judson College on Schartner Field. October 23, 2003Despite drastically out-shooting the Crimson Wave, TIU needed overtime to defeat Calumet College 2-1 on Wednesday in Hammond, Indiana. The Trojans found themselves down 1-0 five minutes into the game, but rebounded against an improved Calumet team when Cori Schwarz scored off a Jill Barre pass ten minutes into the second half. Schwarz then ended the game in overtime with her second goal with the assists going to Jess Bents and Steph Frey. TIU improved to 12-5 overall and 7-1 in conference. Trinity next plays St. Xavier for Senior Day this Saturday, Oct. 25th, at 11:30 am on Schartner Field. October 20, 2003Trinity beat Olivet Nazarene 4-1 in Bourbonnais, IL to run their record to 11-5 overall and 6-1 in the CCAC. Steph Frey scored 2 goals while Jess Bents continues her outstanding season with a goal and 2 assists. Ashleigh Dellos added the fourth goal of the game and the Trojan defense stayed solid in allowing its first goal in the last seven games. With only 3 games remaining in their regular season, TIU travels to Calumet College of St. Joseph on Wednesday for a 4:00pm game and then return home on Saturday for a match versus St. Xavier at 11:30 am on Schartner Field. October 15, 2003TIU hasn't given up a goal since Sept. 25th and kept that streak intact with a 6-0 victory over Cardinal Stritch in Milwaukee Tuesday night. Heather Scherrer recorded the shutout (the team's 6th in a row) while Ashleigh Dellos scored 3 goals and Jess Bents added another 2 assists to her team leading total. Jen Storkel scored her first collegiate goal. The women improved to 10-5 on the year and 5-1 in the CCAC. They travel to Olivet Nazarene University on Saturday, Oct. 18 and play at 1:00 pm in a battle of two teams close to the top of the CCAC. October 11, 2003TIU won its 5th in a row and 6th in its last 7 as they topped CCAC rival Judson College 7-0. Jill Barre scored 3 goals, while Jess Bents added a goal and 2 assists. Other goal scorers were Val Feuling, Ashleigh Dellos and Katelyn Keckeisen. Allison Budden made 3 saves to record the shutout. The win jumps the ladies record to 9-5 and 4-1 in the CCAC. The women travel to Milwaukee, WI on Tuesday to take on Cardinal Stritch at 5:00 pm. October 9, 2003TIU faced St. Francis on Wednesday and came away with a 6-0 victory. After leading 2-0 at half, the Trojans put together some impressive play and exploded for 4 goals in the second half. Goals were scored by Jill Barre, Ashleigh Dellos, Cori Schwarz, Steph Frey and Val Feuling had 2. Katelyn Keckeisen recorded 3 assists and Missy Morris, Lindy Gritter and Jess Bents each had 2. The women play CCAC rival Judson on Saturday at 11:30 AM on Schartner Field. Val Feuling leads the team in scoring with 6 goals and 15 points, while Jess Bents has a team leading 9 assists. October 4, 2003TIU's women's soccer team helped Homecoming off to a good start with their 1-0 victory over McKendree College. Val Feuling netted home a pass from Steph Frey early in the first half and that was all Allison Budden and the Trojan defense needed to hold off the Bearcats. The win moves the Trojan's record to 7-5 overall. TIU faces St. Francis on Wednesday, Oct. 8th on Schartner Field at 4:00 in what should be a very good and exciting match. September 30, 2003TIU faced conference foe Trinity Christian College on the Deerfield campus and won 2-0 on goals by Cori Schwarz and Jessica Bents. The game, played in cold and windy conditions, was tied at 0-0 until early in the second half when Schwarz netted a cross to put the Trojans up for good. Jessica Bents added a goal later in the half and Trinity upped its record to 6-5 and 2-1 in the CCAC. TIU next faces McKendree College on Saturday, Oct. 4th, as part of the TIU Homecoming festivities at 11:30 am on Schartner Field. September 29, 2003 On Wednesday, Sept 24th, Missouri Baptist came to town and despite out-shooting the Spartans and controlling most of the game, the Trojans fell 0-1. But Saturday, Sept. 27th, healed all wounds as the Trojans beat conference foe Illinois Institute of Technology 16-0. Nine different Trojan players scored, while three had hat-tricks (scoring 3 goals in one game). After going 2-1 on the week, the Trojans have evened their record at 5-5 and 1-1 in the CCAC. The women's soccer team is in the middle of a 7 game home stand as they face Trinity Christian Tuesday at 4:00 pm. September 22, 2003The women's soccer team played their first home game of the season on Monday, facing NCAA DIII Carthage College (WI). Carthage jumped out very earlier and surprised Trinity with a quick goal, but the Trojans responded to take a 3-1 lead at halftime and held on the win 3-2. The win evened their record at 4-4. Lindy Gritter, Steph Frey, and Katelyn Keckeisen each scored for TIU with Val Feuling, Ashleigh Dellos, Cori Schwarz and Jess Bents (2) each with assists. September 18, 2003The women's soccer team faced conference rival Robert Morris and came away with a 1-3 loss, despite playing well and controlling most of the possession. The lone Trojan goal was scored by Cori Schwarz, her third on the season with assists by Jill Barre and Valerie Feuling. The loss dropped TIU to 3-4 on the season and 0-1 in conference play. The Trojans are currently #3 in Region VII of the NAIA. They play their first home game of the season Monday, Sept. 22 vs. Carthage College (WI). September 15, 2003Women's soccer was on the road for the third straight weekend. They were in Houghton, NY to face two more nationally tough and ranked opponents in Houghton College (#12 NAIA) and Madonna University (#8 NAIA). They returned with a 2-1 Overtime victory against Madonna and a close 0-1 loss to Houghton. The victory over Madonna was the programs first ever win over a nationally ranked TOP 10 opponent. They are currently 3-3 with close victories over Malone (#3 NCCAA) and Vanguard and losses to Westmont (#1 NAIA) and Mt. Vernon Nazarene (#1 NCCAA). They have had outstanding goalkeeping by freshman Allison Budden who recorded her first collegiate shutout against Malone. The Trojans are currently ranked 1st in Region 7 of the NAIA, #5 Nationally in the NCCAA and #17 in the September 16th NAIA poll. May 15, 2003Katelyn Keckeisen, a four-year varsity starter at Sussex Hamilton High School in Wisconsin, has committed to attend TIU and play soccer. Keckeisen, a forward/midfielder who earned honorable mention all conference honors as a sophomore, and again as a junior, holds the HHS record for single season assists, currently at 14. She is also 3rd in HHS career assists, and 4th in career goals. Katelyn has played club soccer with both the Brookfield Fire and the Milwaukee Kickers and was a member of 3 state championship teams with the Northstars. April 29, 2003Ashleigh Dellos, a forward from Wheaton Academy, has committed to attend TIU in the fall and play soccer. Dellos, who scored 17 goals as a junior, and has tallied 10 so far this spring, will be a welcome addition to the TIU squad. Allison Budden, a goalkeeper for Chicago Sockers FC u-19--a team that has enjoyed tremendous success on a national level--has also committed to attend TIU and compete in the fall. Budden will be among a trio of goalkeepers expected to challenge for the number one shirt. April 3, 2003Cori Schwarz, a forward from Tucson, AZ who played with the Lady Trojans as a freshman in 2001, has returned to the program after a year's absence. Schwarz was the leading scorer for TIU in 2001, tallying 14 goals and 13 assists for 41 points. Schwarz returns to a Lady Trojan side bustling with offensive talent, as Steph Frey, Jill Barre, and Lindy Gritter enjoyed productive seasons offensively, and lead a group of at least half a dozen who are capable goalscorers. March 31, 2003TIU Women's Soccer is pleased to announce the signing of the following student-athletes for the 2003-2004 season: Sarah Weaks-Buffalo Grove, IL Ashley McFarlin-Maple Plain, MN Lisa Speer-Mattoon, IL Nicole Calvin-Omaha, NE Eliza Burley-Alto, MI Cori Schwarz-Tucson, AZ Kaelee Burghuis-Mequon, WI Allison Budden-Waucanda, IL Ashleigh Dellos-Warrenville, IL Katelyn Keckeisen-Sussex, WI Head Coach Patrick Gilliam expressed his excitement about the potential of the student-athletes who have committed to attend thus far, saying, "all of these girls will be good additions to our program, and we are looking forward to see how they fulfill their potential over the next four years." TIU opens the 2003 season in California against defending NAIA National Champion Westmont College on Friday, August 29. |
