TIU Women's Soccer News 2002

November 6, 2002

This afternoon, TIU braved the cold and wind to defeat St. Xavier for the second time this year, advancing to the finals of the CCAC tournament.  Charise McAlister opened the scoring for TIU in the first half, and TIU continued their dominance of the opening period with a second goal scored by Jessica Bents.  TIU's comfortable halftime lead quickly evaporated, however, as St. Xavier scored twice in succession after the interval to put the match on level terms.  TIU would not be denied though, as Beth Drake headed home a Lindy Gritter corner kick for the game winning goal fifteen minutes from time.  Jill Barre's long afternoon of tireless effort was rewarded in the closing moments when she rounded two defenders and placed the ball neatly past St. Xavier's helpless goalkeeper for TIU's fourth goal of the afternoon.  The Lady Trojans will play the winner of the Robert Morris vs. Olivet Nazarene semifinal on either Friday or Saturday

TIU improved to 14-2 overall, and secured a second place finish in the CCAC (7-1) with a dramatic 3-2 overtime victory Tuesday afternoon.  Kelly Campbell opened the scoring for TIU in the first half, notching her first college goal on a brilliant individual effort.  Despite taking that lead into halftime, the Lady Trojans relinquished the lead, only to regain it with only two minutes to play through Missy Morris.  Olivet would not concede defeat, however, scoring yet another equalizing goal just thirty seconds later to even the score at two.  TIU, however, would not be denied, as Jill Barre tallied the game winner in the second overtime period from a Steph Frey assist.  TIU host Houghton College (NY) on Friday at 3 PM.

TIU survived a scare from CCAC rival Trinity Christian College this evening, despite leading 2-0 for virtually the entire match.  Melissa Bogdanovich and Jill Barre opened the scoring to give TIU control of the match, but two quick goals from Trinity Christian in the second half forced overtime.  Fortunately for the Lady Trojans, Lindy Gritter was able to finish a pass from Jessica Bents in the first overtime to give TIU the victory.  After the match, Coach Gilliam had praise for the opposition's effort: "they [Trinity Christian] have really improved; their coach should be a coach of the year candidate."  TIU play host to Calumet on Saturday, when they will recognize their seniors and their families.  Kick off is slated for noon.
