Men's Soccer News 2005December 9, 2005Individual post-season awards for Men's Soccer were announced today, with several players garnering recognition: CCAC 1st Team: Nate Bogdanovich, Danny Drout, Brad Drake CCAC 2nd Team: Kyle Bacon, Travis Bacon NAIA All-Region, HM All-American: Nate Bogdanovich, Danny Drout NCCAA All-Region: Nate Bogdanovich, Adam Riddell, Brad Drake, Miles Shiver NCCAA HM All-American: Nate Bogdanovich December 9, 2005To: The Trinity Community From: Patrick Gilliam, TIU Athletic Director ( pgilliam@tiu.edu ) I regret to announce that Stosh Walsh, Head Men's Soccer Coach and Director of Sports Media at Trinity International University, has resigned his position within our department to pursue a position with The Gallup Organization. Stosh's last day at Trinity will be December 30, 2005. Stosh came to Trinity in the fall of 2000, serving as Assistant Coach with the men's soccer program. Upon my departure from that position in December 2000, he was named head coach and has led the men's soccer team for the last five seasons. In that time, the team has posted an overall record of 50-46-11 and a conference mark of 25-14-3. In the 2004 season, the squad qualified for the NCCAA National Tournament and finished a very strong third in the competition. Even more important, however, Coach Walsh has worked diligently to develop integrity and Christian character in the lives of the men he has lead during his time here at Trinity. I am greatly saddened by the departure of Coach Walsh and yet respect his decision to a move into a field for which he possesses an amazing passion. He has always been a leader of great excellence, and I am confident that he will carry those same traits into his new position with Gallup. His maturity, wisdom, and overall godly leadership will be sorely missed by the entire TIU athletic family. In speaking of his time at Trinity, Stosh says, "I'm honored to have been involved with Trinity Athletics for the past six seasons. I will certainly continue to cherish the relationships I have established here, and I appreciate the opportunities I have been afforded to invest in people's lives through athletics." The Trinity Athletic Department will host a farewell reception for Stosh and his family next Tuesday, December 13, 2005, from 2:00 to 4:00pm in the Lew Student Center. All are welcomed as we show our appreciation for Stosh's years of faithful service and ministry to the TIU campus community. A nationwide search for Coach Walsh's replacement will begin immediately. November 14, 2005TIU played its last game of the 2005 season on Saturday in losing the NCCAA North Central Region Final 0-3 to Trinity Christian College. In the game's opening minutes, a TIU defender was red carded for handling the ball in the box, and Trinity Christian scored on the ensuing penalty kick, putting the Trojans in an 0-1 hole, and down to ten men. TIU persevered, however, dominating the rest of the match and allowing just two shots on goal thereafter. Unfortunately, both of those shots found the net, and TIU was left to rue the unfortunate scoreline. "We played very well today," Coach Walsh said. "Anyone who came late to the game would have had no idea we were playing down a man. Unfortunately, soccer is one of those strange games where the scoreboard does not always reward the better team. Credit Trinity Christian, they did what they had to do, but, obviously, that is a tough result with which to end a season having created the number of opportunities we did, and having the advantage in possession we enjoyed throughout the match even though we only had ten [players]." TIU graduates 3 seniors: Nate Bogdanovich, Adam Riddell, and Matt Taube, all of whom finished their TIU careers on the playing field Saturday. "I can't say enough about these guys," commented Coach Walsh. "They join a legion of players on whose shoulders we stand not just for their ability on the field, but for their leadership and service to the team off it as well. They've made friends for life here, and though we are not going to compete for the national championship, there are things more important than that." November 11, 2005TIU hosted the NCCAA North Central Region tournament this afternoon, playing the #4 seed Northwestern (MN), an NCAA Division III institution. Trinity came out motivated, scoring three goals in the opening 15 minutes of play, and cruised to a 4-1 victory in which everyone on the roster contributed. Kyle Bacon led the way for the Trojans with a goal and an assist, while Miles Shiver, and seniors Adam Riddell and Nate Bogdanovich also registered goals. In the other semifinal match, CCAC rival Trinity Christian downed NCAA III Greenville College 2-1 in the second overtime to advance to tomorrow's final. "It should be a good match," Coach Walsh said. "We had a very competitive contest earlier in the season, and I expect more of the same tomorrow, especially with a berth at nationals on the line." Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 PM, and the winner will head to the NCCAA National Tournament in Kissimmee, Florida. This season marks the 5th time in the last 6 seasons the Trojans have advanced to the NCCAA regional final, and they are bidding for a third trip to the national tournament during that span. Last year, the men finished 3rd at nationals after defeating Greenville College 2-0 in the regional final. November 8, 2005TIU faced Cardinal Stritch with a bid to the Region VII finals on the line this afternoon, and a lackluster first half performance condemned the Trojans to a berth in the NCCAA tournament for the second consecutive year. Stritch got on the board early, heading home from a set piece, before Miles Shiver equalized unassisted for TIU, pouncing on a rebound after a corner kick. The teams remained deadlocked in the second half and through the overtime periods, despite numerous chances and a hit crossbar by TIU. The game went to the spot for a settlement, where Stritch emerged with a 3-2 win. Trinity will be the #1 seed and host of the NCCAA North Central regional on Friday and Saturday, 11/11-12, as they try to earn their second consecutive championship and another berth in the National Tournament, where they finished 3rd last year. November 5, 2005Trinity traveled to Judson for the CCAC Tournament Final on Saturday afternoon, falling 2-4 after a well-contested match. TIU got on the board in the first minute when Nate Bogdanovich finished a great feed from Danny Drout. Judson equalized just two minutes later, and took a 2-1 lead after 27 minutes, but then it was Trinity's turn to equalize after two minutes, as Kyle Bacon scored from a free kick in the 29th minute. Judson struck again before half time to take a 3-2 lead, and finished a corner kick play in the second half to account for the final margin. Trinity created chances to get back in to the game, striking the crossbar with a corner of their own, but it was not enough, and the Trojans finished runner up in the conference tournament for the second consecutive year. "I'm pleased with the way we played offensively," said Coach Walsh. "Obviously, to give up four goals means we have a bit of work to do in our own end, but Judson deserves credit, they have a very fast attack and can finish their chances, so they made us pay for some of our mistakes. Hopefully, we'll have a chance to see them one more time in Iowa." The Trojans play home to Cardinal Stritch on Tuesday at 1 PM with a berth in the regional final four in Iowa at stake. November 2, 2005The CCAC released its post season all-conference list today, and TIU was well represented, as senior forward Nate Bogdanovich, junior midfielder Danny Drout, and junior goalkeeper Brad Drake were all named to the first team. For Bogdanovich, it is his third consecutive 1st team award, while Drake makes his second straight appearance among the CCAC's best. Named to the 2nd (honorable mention) team were junior defender Kyle Bacon, and freshman midfielder Travis Bacon, who also received consideration for freshman of the year, an award won last year by TIU's Caleb Redelman. All-Region and All-American voting will take place over the course of the next two weeks. November 2, 2005Trinity advanced to the CCAC tournament final for the second consecutive year with a victory over Olivet Nazarene this afternoon. The two teams battled hard for 110 minutes, but neither team could find a way through, and so the match ended in a 0-0 stalemate and headed to the spot. In the penalty kick shootout, each of Trinity's five shooters converted their kicks, and the Trojans settled the tie with a 5-3 penalty kick result. Trinity travels to Judson College on Saturday for the CCAC final. Kickoff time is TBA. October 27, 2005Trinity played host to Bethel (IN) this afternoon in a non-conference tilt. Bethel started the game well, and Trinity scored a goal in the first half against the run of play, but the lead was short-lived, as Bethel equalized before half time. Both teams had chances go by the wayside in the second half, and both teams' goalkeepers came up big in the overtime periods to ensure that the sides shared the spoils. "It was a great game from which to head into the playoffs," said Coach Walsh. "Bethel is a very good team, and I think both sides will leave this game feeling good about the way we played and our chances headed into the playoffs." TIU faces Olivet Nazarene, who defeated St. Xavier in the CCAC Quarterfinals, on Wednesday, November 2nd. A 2:00 PM kickoff at TIU is planned. October 22, 2005Fresh off an overtime victory to seal 2nd place in the CCAC, Trinity played home to St. Xavier University to round out the conference schedule this afternoon. TIU went down 0-1 early, as St. Xavier capitalized on a poor pass by Trinity in their own end. The Trojans equalized on a set piece, however, when Kyle Bacon's 50 yard ball was met by Nate Bogdanovich to even the score at one. Though both teams had chances in the second half, neither side was able to capitalize, and overtime ensued. Six minutes in to the first overtime period, St. Xavier was able to convert a set piece opportunity, condemning TIU to just their second defeat in the last nine contests. "We were not at our best today," said Coach Walsh. "I think the high moment on Wednesday left this match with something to be desired, but full credit to St. X., as they played well and deserved to win. We only rarely looked the better side today, and we'll have to improve on today's performance heading in to the playoffs." TIU finishes the regular season home to Bethel (IN) on Wednesday, then faces the winner of the #3 vs. #6 CCAC tournament match the following Wednesday. October 20, 2005TIU traveled to Palos Heights for an important match versus Trinity Christian on Wednesday night, with 2nd place in the CCAC and a first round bye in the conference tournament at stake. TIU opened the scoring in the first half when senior Nate Bogdanovich finished a counterattack from a Travis Bacon assist. The Trojans took the lead into half time, but were able to hold it only ten seconds into the second half, as Trinity Christian's kickoff was misplayed by a TIU defender when the ball bounced awkwardly, and a TCC forward rushed in to finish the chance. The two teams exchanged chances for the rest of the match and through the first overtime, before Nate Bogdanovich returned Travis Bacon's earlier favor, and set him up to score the match-winning goal with four minutes to play in the second overtime period. "We were outplayed in the first half," said Coach Walsh. "It was a difficult surface tonight, and we had a tough time keeping the ball, so we had to make some adjustments to our style, but we found a way to win in the end. Brad [Drake] played great in the goal tonight like he has all season, and we missed a few chances that we'd normally convert, but Trinity Christian is a tough team to play against, and have improved significantly over the course of the last two or three years, so I'm quite happy with the result." In fact, the loss for TCC is their first at home this season. Having clinched 2nd place in the conference, TIU looks forward to St. Xavier on Saturday, and Bethel College on Wednesday, 10/26 before heading into the playoffs. October 14, 2005Looking to rebound from their first conference loss, the TIU Trojans took the field versus University of Mary (ND) this afternoon. It did not take long for Trinity to exert their dominance, scoring 3 first half goals en route to a 5-2 win in which everyone on the roster contributed. "This was a good game for us, as we were able to get some experience for several players, and give some of our injuries time to heal," said Coach Walsh. Danny Drout provided the main thrust of offense for TIU, registering a goal and three assists. TIU returns to CCAC action next week, traveling to Trinity Christian for a 7:30 PM start on Wednesday night. October 11, 2005Newly re-christened Schartner Field was the site of a top of the CCAC showdown between 5-0 Judson and 5-0 TIU this afternoon. Judson got on the board early with a controversial penalty kick, then added a second moments later for a 2-0 advantage before ten minutes had elapsed. Trinity found a way through as Nate Bogdanovich scored from a Miles Shiver assist before half time, and the teams went into the interval at 2-1. In the second half, Trinity dictated much of the play, creating several chances, but were unable to notch an equalizer, and a well placed free kick 5 minutes from time by Judson accounted for the final margin. "Of course we felt a bit hard done by with the penalty," said Coach Walsh, "but that is the kind of thing we have to fight through, and we gave up a terrible goal almost right after that and put ourselves in a real hole. The guys deserve a lot of credit for fighting back, and I thought we were the better team in the second half, but Judson is too good to spot two goals like that, so it was always going to be difficult for us to find a way back. It's disappointing, but we still have two conference matches left, and we'll be there at the end and in the tournament." October 8, 2005TIU played host to Illinois Tech in CCAC action this afternoon at Homecoming. After a special field naming ceremony to honor former Trinity coach Mark Schartner, the Trojans seized the lead as Travis Bacon finished his brother Josh's service. IIT was not long behind, however, and tallied an equalizer before half time. Just before the interval, IIT found themselves down to 10 men after a red card, and though they proved stubborn in resistance, TIU found a way through in the second half as Caleb Redelman notched the game winner just 6 minutes from time. "It wasn't our best performance, certainly" said Coach Walsh. "That said though, we did have some set piece chances, and we found a way to win. IIT has a very competitive team, and it was a good result for us against what I thought was a very determined side, even down to ten men. We've come through a very difficult week with two wins, so I'm quite proud of the team." With the victory, the Trojans improve to 6-5 on the season, and 5-0 in the CCAC. TIU hosts Judson in a top of the CCAC clash on Tuesday afternoon at 4:00. October 6, 2005Trinity continued its unbeaten run in the CCAC on Wednesday night, overcoming a string of unwelcome circumstances to defeat Robert Morris 3-2 in Springfield. "We had a bus mix up, and ended up starting the match late with only 7 minutes on the field to warm up," lamented Coach Walsh. That, combined with the loss of Nate Bogdanovich and Kyle Bacon to suspension, meant that TIU had a mountain to climb before they even considered the opponent. After starting well, the Trojans conceded the first goal of the match before equalizing through senior Matt Taube's second goal of the year. Shortly thereafter, fellow senior Adam Riddell gave TIU a 2-1 lead, which they took into halftime. After the interval, Robert Morris fought back to equalize, but Travis Bacon's 5th goal of the campaign in the 63rd minute, and a Robert Morris red card proved the difference for Trinity. "I give Robert Morris a lot of credit," said Coach Walsh. "They have had a frustrating season and are a lot better than their record would suggest. They gave us a real fight tonight, and our guys deserve a lot of credit, especially our seniors [Adam Riddell and Matt Taube] for leading us to a result tonight." With the win, TIU improves to 5-5 on the season, and 4-0 in conference. Next up for the Trojans is a Homecoming match versus CCAC rival IIT. A 2:00 PM kickoff is planned after a special field dedication ceremony to honor longtime Trinity coach, Mark Schartner. September 27, 2005TIU played just its second home match of the season this afternoon versus St. Francis in a CCAC tilt. Trinity managed a 2-0 win to bring their record to 3-0 in conference play and extend their shutout streak to 3 games. The first half was sluggish for the Trojans, and a 0-0 halftime score was a welcome sight after TIU had a player sent off after 25 minutes for a second bookable offense. In the second half, however, TIU rebounded in spite of being down to 10 men, as Travis Bacon scored TIU's first goal, and his fourth, unassisted, and Miles Shiver got off the mark from a Mark Robinson assist to account for the final margin. TIU held on thereafter, in spite of having a second player sent off with 20 minutes to play. "Our guys fought hard today and got a deserved result," Coach Walsh said. "The players who were on the field, especially when we were down to nine, deserve a lot of credit. They kept battling, got the goals we needed, and kept a clean sheet as well." TIU continues CCAC play next week with a trip to Robert Morris in Springfield. September 24, 2005TIU made their way north to Milwaukee to face CCAC rival Cardinal Stritch University this afternoon. The Trojans scored a goal in each half to record their second straight 2-0 victory. Nate Bogdanovich tallied his team-leading 4th goal in the first half, and freshman Travis Bacon netted his 3rd in the second half to seal the win for Trinity. Brad Drake made five saves to preserve the shutout for the Trojans, who improve to 3-5 on the season, and 2-0 in conference play. Coach Walsh was pleased with the team's play this week, saying, "The CCAC is a tough conference, and has as much parody this year as it has in the six years I've been here, so it is nice to get off to a good start. We've done well to execute what we've been working on in training this week, and two shutouts is a big bonus also." TIU continues conference play home to St. Francis on Tuesday at 4:00 PM. September 22, 2005TIU opened CCAC play away to Olivet Nazarene University yesterday afternoon. Both sides were able to generate decent scoring chances, but it was the Trojans who finished their opportunities, recording a 2-0 victory with a goal on either side of half time from senior Adam Riddell. "We're starting to settle in to a system and style of play now," said Coach Walsh, "we had several players play significant roles today, and we are getting goals from a variety of sources [the Trojans have three players who have multiple goal games this year], so hopefully we can grow stronger as the season progresses." Trinity continues the conference schedule away to Cardinal Stritch on Saturday. A 1:00 PM kickoff at the Uhlein Soccer Complex is planned. September 19, 2005TIU traveled to John Brown University (AR) over the weekend to compete in a tournament versus the hosts and Oklahoma City University. In the first game, the Trojans fell behind 0-1, but were able to equalize and send the game into half time deadlocked at 1-1. Things took an unfortunate turn thereafter, however, when a long range shot from JBU deflected off a TIU defender into the net for an own goal and a 1-2 deficit. JBU was able to add another before TIU pulled to within one through Nate Bogdanovich's second goal of the match. The Trojans had a chance to tie in the last few seconds of the game, but sent a six yard shot over the crossbar and fell 2-3. "We were a bit unlucky today," Coach Walsh commented. "We hit a crossbar and missed a sitter at the end, but John Brown is a solid team, and we'll gain from the experience as we head into CCAC play." Looking to rebound on Saturday versus Oklahoma City, the Trojans fought the Stars to a 0-0 halftime score, but things fell apart in the second half as they conceded 4 unanswered goals to fall 0-4, dropping their record to 1-5 on the season. "It has certainly been tough," said Coach Walsh, "but if you look at our schedule, we've played some of the best teams in the country, and stayed with them for long periods of time before making some mistakes that proved our undoing. We need to improve on our second half performances, and I think we'll be fine." TIU opens conference play away to Olivet Nazarene on Wednesday, and away to Cardinal Stritch on Saturday before returning home to host St. Francis on Tuesday, 9/27. September 9, 2005TIU fell to 1-3 with a 0-6 loss to NAIA #4 Rio Grande (OH) tonight at IIT in Chicago. After conceding a penalty kick goal early on, TIU went into the half down 0-2. They improved in the second half, but three goals in the last 20 minutes of play stretched the margin of victory for Rio. The men look forward to next weekend, where they will play John Brown (AR) and Oklahoma City at the John Brown tournament before starting CCAC play. September 7, 2005TIU opened its home schedule this afternoon versus University of Illinois-Springfield looking to rebound after opening the season with two losses at the Milligan (TN) tournament. After a scoreless first half in which both teams had opportunities, TIU took control through Nate Bogdanovich's first goal of the season. Shortly after, he turned provider, assisting freshman Travis Bacon on the first of his two goals in the game. Junior midfielder Danny Drout also factored heavily, registering two assists. TIU improves to 1-2 on the young season, and faces NAIA powerhouse Rio Grande on Friday night at IIT in Chicago. A 7:00 PM kickoff is planned. September 2-3, 2005TIU traveled to Milligan College (TN) over the Labor Day weekend, where they faced NAIA #3 Berry College (GA) and Lee University (TN). TIU contested well in the first half of each match, conceding a late goal to Berry to end the half at 0-1, and deadlocked with Lee at 0-0, but in the second half of each contest, the Trojans were unable to hold the momentum, falling in both games by 1-6 margins. Two seniors scored the only goals for the Trojans on the weekend, as Adam Riddell tallied the first goal of the 2005 campaign, and Matt Taube etched his name on the scoresheet versus Lee. The Trojans look to rebound in their home opener on Wednesday when they face University of Illinois-Springfield. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 PM. |
