NCCAA NATIONAL TOURNAMENT: 3rd PLACE

November 22, 2004

TIU finished the NCCAA National Tournament with a win over Mid-Continent College (KY) in the 3rd place match. Both Mid-Continent and TIU were missing key players through injury, but it was the Trojans who responded best early, jumping out to a 3-0 lead before Mid-Continent responded with three goals of their own to tie the match. TIU was not to be denied, however, as Miles Shiver found the net with Baraka Kasali's cross for the match winning goal just one minute from the end of the second overtime period. TIU finishes the tournament in third place, where they also claimed the tournament sportsmanship award, their second such award of the season, having won the conference award as well. Nate Bogdanovich's five goals in three tournament games brought his season tally to 20, and earned him offensive MVP honors at the competition. Other players who contributed greatly were Nate Taube (5 assists), Adam Riddell (2 goals), and Brad Drake, who saved a penalty kick in the 3rd place match to send the Trojans home happy. TIU finishes the season at 16-9-2, with a two year record of 27-14-6 (.638).

Men's Soccer faced MidAmerica Nazarene toady in the Semi-final game of the NCCAA National Tournament and lost 2-1 despite an edge in shots and possession. Nate Bogdanovich got TIU started from a Nate Taube assist in the 14th minute to put the Trojans in the lead 1-0. Seven minutes later, a well-placed MANU free kick tied the score at 1-1, and it stayed that way until the second half. In the 77th minute, MidAmerica scored the go ahead goal as the Trojans fell short in their bid for an NCCAA National Championship. They will play in the 3rd place game on Monday, Nov 22nd. Their opponent will be Mid-Continent University and kick-off is set for 2:00 PM EST.

The Trojans exploded for 3 more goals to jump to a 4-1 lead at the half. The teams played a scoreless second half as TIU advanced. TIU traveled to Judson College for the CCAC Tournament Final on Saturday, falling 0-3 to a strong Judson side, then faced St. Xavier University for the third time since October 20th in the NAIA Region VII Quarterfinal. After a lackluster first half in which they conceded the game's first goal, the Trojans rebounded to equalize and create several good chances, but the game remained deadlocked through the overtime periods and TIU was thwarted in penalty kicks (1-3) by the St. Xavier goalkeeper. The men enjoy the reprieve of the NCCAA Regional Final, however, which they will host on Saturday at 11:30 AM.

November 4, 2004

Additionally, midfielder Caleb Redelman was named CCAC Freshman of the Year, and Trinity also captured the Karl Boeck Sportsmanship Award. "I'm thrilled for these players, as they certainly deserve their recognition," said Coach Walsh. "And it is especially rewarding to have received the Karl Boeck Sportsmanship Award also."

November 3, 2004

The TIU men played host to St. Xavier University on Wednesday, winning a hard fought game 1-0 to advance to Saturday's CCAC Final versus Judson College. Danny Drout scored the game's only goal from Nate Taube and Nate Bogdanovich in the 30th minute, and the strong Trojan defense held firm to keep their 8th clean sheet of the season.

October 20, 2004

TIU played away to CCAC foe St. Xavier on Wednesday afternoon with 2nd place in the conference on the line. The Trojans were down 1-0 at half time after a St. Xavier counterattack resulted in a goal, but TIU was not to be denied, as second half goals by Miles Shiver and Baraka Kasali sealed the win for TIU. With the result, the Trojans wrap up 2nd place and earn a bye into the CCAC Semifinal, which they will host on Wednesday, November 3rd. The team finishes the regular season home schedule on Saturday versus William Penn before traveling to Muscatine, IA to face NAIA Region VII powerhouse Grand View College to complete the regular season.

October 18, 2004

The Trojans traveled to Ohio to face Cedarville University on Friday night, and though both teams created chances, defense and goalkeeping prevailed as a full 90 minutes and two overtimes were not enough for either team to notch a goal. The shutout marked the third consecutive game in which the Trojan defense had not allowed a goal. On Saturday, TIU faced NAIA #1 and defending National Champion University of Rio Grande, losing 4-1 despite playing a competitive game. Rio got on the board early, ending TIU's shutout streak at 315 minutes, and took the 1-0 lead into halftime. TIU replied early in the second half through Miles Shiver to tie the score at 1, but were unfortunate to concede an own goal shortly thereafter, and Rio went on to cement the victory with two more goals. The Trojans were outshot 9-5 for the match. "It was a great opportunity for us to see how we measure up against the best in the NAIA," said Coach Walsh. "Although they were very good, I don't think we have anything about which to be ashamed coming off the field; we played well, and went into the match to compete, not pack it in, so I am proud of our boys today." With the weekend's results, TIU stands at 10-6-1 (6-2 CCAC) with three games to play. TIU travels to St. Xavier to complete CCAC play on Wednesday (2:30 kickoff) before finishing the regular season home schedule versus William Penn on Saturday (2:00 PM kickoff).

Brad Drake and Pete Taylor shared TIU's 5th shutout of the season in the goal. TIU travels to Ohio to face Cedarville University and NAIA #1 University of Rio Grande on Friday and Saturday before returning home to complete CCAC play away to St. Xavier University on Tuesday.

October 11, 2004

TIU hosted Robert Morris College on Saturday, posting a 2-0 win thanks to goals by Caleb Redelman and Nate Bogdanovich, while the defense did a nice job in holding the Eagles at bay. The victory improves the Trojans' overall record to 9-5, and 5-2 in the CCAC. TIU begins a busy week of travel next Tuesday versus CCAC foe IIT before traveling to Ohio to face Cedarville University and the University of Rio Grande.

October 6, 2004

TIU played host to CCAC rival Cardinal Stritch University on Wednesday, and was unable to overcome two disallowed goals, falling 0-1 despite having an abundance of scoring chances and dictating play for much of the game. Brad Drake made several fine saves in goal for the Trojans, who drop to 8-5 overall and 4-2 in the CCAC with the loss. TIU plays home to Robert Morris College on Saturday; a 4:00 PM kickoff is planned.

October 2, 2004

TIU fell to 8-4 after two disappointing defeats during the week. On Tuesday, the Trojans faced NAIA #7 Judson College, and lost a very physical match 0-2 after having had a late goal repealed for offside. On Saturday, Cornerstone University came calling, and the Trojans produced a lackluster performance for Homecoming, ending up on the wrong side of a 3-6 result. CCAC play resumes on Wednesday with a home match versus Cardinal Stritch, and continues on Saturday versus Robert Morris; both games are slated for 4:00 PM kickoffs.

September 25, 2004

TIU finished off a successful week on Saturday, recording a 4-1 win over CCAC rival Trinity Christian College. Earlier in the week, TIU avenged a penalty-kick playoff loss from a year ago, defeating Olivet 3-0 on the strength of two goals by Nate Bogdanovich. Once again the TIU attack was balanced, with five players recording goals over the course of the two games. With the victories, the Trojans run their record to 8-2 overall, and 4-0 in CCAC play, with a Tuesday trip to undefeated Judson looming.

September 14, 2004

Fresh from achieving an NAIA national ranking (#25), the Trojans improved to 6-2 overall and 2-0 in CCAC play with a 2-0 victory over Calumet College of St. Joseph. TIU dominated play throughout, conceding very little to their opponents, and coasted to the victory after two first half goals by Jesse Fox and Nate Bogdanovich. TIU takes the rest of the week off before hosting Olivet Nazarene and Trinity Christian in CCAC action next week.

September 11, 2004

TIU began a busy week of road games with a trip to the University of St. Francis to open CCAC play, and came away with a 5-1 victory thanks to 3 second half goals. Once again, the TIU attack was balanced, with 5 players on the scoresheet. Just two days later, TIU traveled to NCCAA North Central region foe Greenville College, where they defeated the hard-working and well-organized Panthers 3-2 on the strength of two goals by Miles Shiver, bringing his team-leading season total to four. Saturday the tired Trojans fell 2-4 to McKendree, having missed some very good chances and endured some difficult treatment by the referee. "This week was a real challenge," said Coach Walsh. "We did well to defeat an improving St. Francis side, then battled hard to subdue a Greenville team that was very motivated to do well against us, and Saturday was a tough physical battle in which we really had to maintain our composure, especially given some of the actions of the referee." TIU continues conference play on Tuesday at home versus Calumet-St. Joseph. A 4:00 PM kickoff is planned.

September 4, 2004

TIU improved to 3-1 on the young season with weekend victories over Missouri Baptist (1-0) and Bethel (IN) 2-1 at the Robert Morris College Eagle Invitational Tournament. Danny Drout scored the lone goal in the first match, while Baraka Kasali and Nate Bogdanovich tallied goals against Bethel before they clawed one back with a penalty kick. "What a couple of great results for us," said Coach Walsh. "To win a tournament against quality competition like this with a young group is fantastic. We're getting better with every game and gaining valuable experience in difficult matches." TIU opens the conference schedule with a midweek game versus University of St. Francis next week before traveling to face Greenville and McKendree over the weekend.

August 29, 2004

TIU opened the home schedule yesterday evening against Davenport (MI), scoring two goals in each half to defeat a very defensive-minded Panther squad. "We scored some very nice goals today against a team that certainly was here to play defense. The late goal was unfortunate to concede, but overall the guys have done well today," said Coach Walsh. Next for the Trojans is a stern weekend test versus Missouri Baptist (Friday) and Bethel (IN) (Saturday) at the Robert Morris tournament in Springfield, IL.

August 25, 2004

TIU opened the 2004 season last night at the University of Illinois-Springfield, dropping a 2-3 decision after conceding two first half goals. "We gifted them their goals, but give them credit, they are a strong team and made us pay for our mistakes," said Coach Walsh. TIU made it a contest with two second half goals in the span of a minute, but it was not enough, as the Trojans fall to 0-1 on the season. TIU opens the home schedule versus Davenport (MI) on Saturday at 5 PM.
