TIU Men's Soccer News 2003November 18, 2003 It was déja vû all over again when TIU and Olivet Nazarene faced off on Schartner Field for the NCCAA North Central Region Final on Saturday, Nov. 11th. With a berth in the NCCAA National Tournament at stake, the teams played to a 1-1 tie at the end of regulation. After 2 scoreless overtime periods, they would head to penalty kicks and just like 10 days before, Olivet Nazarene would win 4-2 on PK's. The loss ended the men's season at 11-7-2 and 5-2-2 in the CCAC. A fine season did not go un-rewarded as post season awards were announced. Nate Bogdanovich, Derek Winter and Kyle Bacon were named to the NCCAA North Central All-Region Team and Stosh Walsh tied for North Central Region Coach of the Year. In the CCAC, Nate Bogdanovich was named to the First Team, while Drew Cook, Kyle Bacon and Brad Drake received Second Team honors. Nate Bogdanovich was named Player of the Year in the CCAC and placed on the NAIA Region VII Team. November 1, 2003 After finishing third in the regular season, TIU began CCAC postseason play at home versus Olivet Nazarene University on Saturday. Despite conceding an early goal, the men were able to climb back into the match with a goal from Kyle Bacon to tie the score at one. TIU had the best chances thereafter, including a penalty kick just 12 minutes from time, but were left to rue their second penalty kick off the post in as many matches as the game headed to overtime. Neither team was able to settle the issue through two extra periods, and so the match headed to the spot, where Olivet's goalkeeper stood tall, saving two penalties to secure a 4-2 win for the visitors. "Olivet's goalkeeper was the difference in the match today," said Coach Walsh. "He made some fine saves in the run of play, and then to make two penalty saves is unbelievable. That said, I am happy with the chances we created; though we were a bit unfortunate today, we have been playing quite well over the last two or three matches." TIU await their next opponent, as NCCAA North Central regional play is set to begin next week, with times and locations TBA. October 30, 2003 After completing the CCAC season with a 0-0 home draw versus St. Xavier University (IL) to finish 5-2-2 in conference (3rd place), the Trojans traveled to North Central College on Wednesday the 29th to conclude the regular season. TIU got the first goal of the match from senior captain Derek Winter, and added two goals in the second half from substitutes Ross O'Hair and Adam Riddell to account for the final margin. "The goals we scored tonight were top drawer," said Coach Walsh. "We've spent some time in training on our finishing of late, and the work paid dividends tonight." TIU opens CCAC playoff competition on Saturday afternoon at 1 PM here at Trinity. October 23, 2003 TIU fell to 5-2-1 in conference play, 10-5-1 overall with CCAC losses to Cardinal Stritch (WI) and Kendall College (IL), both by the score of 0-1. These matches mark the first times TIU has been shut out in the 2003 season. October 11, 2003 TIU played home to NAIA #20 Judson College on Saturday afternoon, getting a goal on either side of half time to defeat their CCAC rivals and improve to 5-0-1 in conference play, 10-3-1 overall. TIU was led by goalkeeper Brad Drake, who made seven saves to collect TIU's 5th shutout of the season. The Trojans play away to Cardinal Stritch University (WI) on Tuesday night at 7 PM. October 8, 2003 TIU continued its three game homestand yesterday with a 4-0 win over CCAC opponent University of St. Francis. The Trojans scored two goals on either side of halftime for the victory, and the defense did its job as well, as TIU goalkeeper Brad Drake was forced into just three saves. TIU improves to 9-3-1 overall, 4-0-1 in the CCAC, and hosts Judson College on Saturday at 2 PM. October 4, 2003 TIU hosted McKendree College for its annual Homcoming match on Saturday, controlling play throughout, but missing several chances before connecting on a restart opportunity in the second half. "Our possession was very good today, and it was nice to get a goal on a restart after the problems we had on Wednesday," said Coach Walsh. TIU improves to 8-3-1 on the season, with conference foes University of St. Francis (IL), and Judson College (IL) coming to visit the Trojans on Tuesday and Saturday, respectively. October 2, 2003 The TIU Men's Soccer team traveled to Palos Heights, IL to face CCAC rival Trinity Christian College on Wednesday night, and had to settle for a tie despite outshooting the Trolls 13-4 after conceding a late goal. "Our failure to capitalize on restarts was the difference in the match tonight," lamented Coach Walsh. "If a team is going to give us that many chances from that many fouls [34], we have to be able to make them pay." TIU's record stands at 7-3-1 on the season (3-0-1 CCAC), with McKendree College coming to town on Saturday for Homecoming (2 PM). September 29, 2003 TIU ran its record to 7-3 and remained undefeated (3-0) in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference after it defeated Illinois Institute of Technology 6-0 on Saturday, Sept. 27th. The men won their fifth in-a-row and out-scored their opponents on the week 14-1. Once again, the Trojans enjoyed a balanced attack, as five different players tallied goals on Saturday, while the defense has found its form, conceding just a penalty kick goal in the last 367 minutes of play. The men travel to Trinity Christian College on Wednesday and will have a doubleheader with the JV playing at 5:00 pm and the Varsity at 7:30 pm. September 25, 2003 TIU recorded its fourth consecutive win, second at home, on Wednesday with a 4-0 defeat of Marian College of Indiana. The men jumped out early to take the lead on a penalty kick and the team added 2 more goals in the half to lead 3-0 at the intermission. The Trojans tallied another after the half time break, and finished the evening with 4 different goal scorers and improved to 6-3 on the season. They face conference foe Illinois Institute of Technology Saturday at 2:00 pm on Frazier Field on the campus of Trinity International University. September 23, 2003 TIU returned home after seven games on the road to host Carthage College at North Park in Lincolnshire in front of a healthy crowd on Monday night, and came away with a 4-1 victory with two goals on either side of the interval. TIU notched the first two goals of the game through Nate Bogdanovich and Drew Cook, and Carthage pulled one back with a penalty kick before half time. TIU took over after that, however, as Bogdanovich tallied his second of the match, and Derek Winter contributed his first of the season. TIU improves to 5-3 with the victory, and faces Marian College (IN) on Wednesday at 4:00 PM before continuing the conference season versus IIT at home on Saturday at 2:00 PM. September 22, 2003 Nate Bogdanovich was named Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Player of the Week and NCCAA Men's Soccer Division I Student-Athlete of the Week with his 3 goals and 1 assist on the week. The men are currently ranked #3 in Region VII of the NAIA. September 20, 2003 TIU began CCAC play this week with wins over Robert Morris College (NAIA #23, Region VII #1) and Olivet Nazarene University. On Wednesday, the Trojans made the trip to Springfield to face a tough Robert Morris squad, and fell behind early as the opposition were able to score from a corner kick. TIU responded with three goals before half time, however, and despite conceding a second goal later in the half, held on for a scoreless second half to record a 3-2 victory. On Saturday, TIU's road schedule continued, as they traveled to Kankakee to face Olivet Nazarene University. Again, the Trojans fell behind early, but were able to get the equalizing goal in the second half through Ross O'Hair, the first of his collegiate career, and Nate Bogdanovich scored the game winner in overtime from a Jesse Fox assist. With the victories, TIU improves to 4-3 and 2-0 in conference play on the young season. TIU hosts Carthage College (WI) on Monday night at 7:30 PM at the North Park Complex in Lincolnshire. September 12-13, 2003 TIU continued its early season road stretch with a trip to Iowa to face Grandview College and William Penn University this weekend. Against Grandview, TIU came out flat, and conceded seven goals en route to a 1-7 thumping. The next day against William Penn the team was ready to play, but a controversial penalty kick was the difference in the match, as TIU fell 1-2. Their record now stands at 2-3 for the season, with conference play to begin next week versus Robert Morris College and Olivet Nazarene University. September 5-6, 2003 TIU headed to Indiana over the weekend to face Taylor University and Indiana Wesleyan, coming away with victories in both contests to improve to 2-1. The Trojans required extra time to defeat Taylor, having let them back into the match despite going 1-0 up after just six minutes through Danny Drout, who notched his first collegiate goal on an assist from Drew Cook. After falling behind 2-1 and 3-2, Trinity equalized through Kyle Bacon's first collegiate goal 13 minutes from time on an assist from Nate Bogdanovich. Taylor had an opportunity to put the game away in the first overtime, as they were awarded a penalty kick, but Freshman goalkeeper Brad Drake saved brilliantly, and in the second overtime, Bacon returned the favor to Bogdanovich, feeding him the ball for the game-winner, his second goal of the match. Trinity had little time to celebrate, however, as they had less than 24 hours before traveling to Marion to face Indiana Wesleyan University. Again, TIU got on the board first, as Jesse Fox scored his first collegiate goal to give Trinity a 1-0 lead. More goals followed, as Nate Bogdanovich tallied his fourth goal of the season for TIU's second, and Kyle Bacon scored on a penalty kick for the game winner before Bogdanovich's second of the match put the game away. TIU travels to Iowa this weekend for matches against Grandview College and William Penn University, before returning home for the start of conference play the following week. August 30, 2003 TIU traveled to Kenosha, WI to face the University of Wisconsin-Parkside this afternoon, falling 1-2 in overtime, in what was a very physical affair. The teams were locked in a goal-less draw at halftime, until Sophomore forward Nate Bogdanovich claimed the lead for TIU with a beautiful goal from 20 yards. Despite scoring first, however, TIU was unable to hold the momentum, as Parkside battled back with a goal to force overtime, where they finished a ball from a goal mouth scramble. In spite of the loss, Coach Walsh was pleased with his team's performance overall, "Parkside is a very good team; full credit to them, as they caused us to work very hard today both mentally and physically, but we are certainly closer this year than we were last year. It was a very physical game, one that demanded a lot of our players, and I think we responded well, especially given our youth. It will not be long before we figure out how to get results from these kinds of matches." TIU travel to Indiana next weekend to face Taylor University and Indiana Wesleyan on Friday and Saturday. August 21, 2003 TIU opened the 2003 season with a scrimmage at home versus the College of Lake County on Wednesday afternoon, recording a comfortable 8-0 win after scoring six goals in the opening 30 minutes. Debutant freshmen Danny Drout and Mark Robinson each recorded two goals, with Drout adding two assists for a six point afternoon, while sophomore Nate Bogdanovich helped himself to a hat-trick. "This was a good start to the pre-season for us," said Coach Walsh. "CLC played an offside trap, which caused us to make some adjustments. We are still trying to work a few things out, but it was nice to get the team on the field against another school after several days of training only against one another." TIU travel to Dominican University in River Forest for another scrimmage on Saturday at 10 AM and Noon. May 8, 2003 TIU Men's Soccer is pleased to announce the commitment of the following student-athletes to attend Trinity and play soccer in the fall:
Luke Anderson-Rockford, IL Daniel Bryant-Matthews, NC Chris Carazas-La Paz, Bolivia Bradley Drake-Bloomington, IL Danny Drout-Oconomowoc, WI Jesse Fox-Tucson, AZ Dan Ionescu-Chicago, IL Tim Jeanson-Racine, WI Chris Kasali-Nairobi, Kenya Joseph Moore-Flintstone, GA AJ Mueller-Miramar, FL Ross O'Hair-Tucson, AZ Caleb Parnin-North Muskegon, MI Ryan Pearson-Medinah, IL David Reid-Waltham, MA Nathan Rimkus-Gurnee, IL Mark Robinson-Third Lake, IL Miles Shiver-Tucson, AZ
Coach Walsh expressed his enthusiasm at the recruiting class so far, saying, "obviously, it is a great class in terms of sheer numbers, especially as we are still awaiting decisions from a few players about the offers we made to them. In addition, we had four players walk on, and one transfer in at semester, so our team will have a very different makeup for the fall. It will mean increased competition for places in the team next year, and our JV team should be very strong also." Coach Walsh also noted that several of the entering freshmen come from quality club and high school programs, and several of them have a good chance of playing significant roles at the Varsity level in the fall. |
