TIU Men's Soccer News 2002December 4, 2002 Graduating senior captain Kyle Wilkinson was named to the National Christian College Athletic Association North Central All-Region Team this week. Wilkinson was recognized as one of the top 15 players in the region (six teams from two states) as selected by opposing coaches within the region. "I'm extremely proud of Kyle, not just because he has been recognized for his ability, but because he represents well the spirit of the awards bestowed by the NCCAA," Coach Walsh said. "It has been a privilege for me to have been associated with him these past three years, and he will be dearly missed next season both on and off the field." October 11-12, 2002 TIU traveled to Mishawaka, IN, to face Bethel College (NAIA #18) on Friday. The Trojans led 1-0, 2-1, and 3-2 before conceding two goals in the final eight minutes to lose 3-4. Nate Bogdanovich, Josh Cake, and Drew Cook tallied the Trojan goals. "We felt a bit hard done by, as a penalty kick and an own goal accounted for two of their scores, but they are a very good team, one of the best we will play all season, so we have to give them credit for the way they came back in the second half," Coach Walsh said. The following day, TIU faced conference opponent Kendall College, losing the match 0-1 in overtime. "We were somewhat flat emotionally after the Bethel match, but we have to learn to approach every game with the same mentality--something we have been working to learn all season. We will learn from these experiences, and they will help us to attain the level at which we expect to play," said Coach Walsh. TIU face CCAC rival Olivet Nazarene University at home on Wednesday, 10/16. A 3:00 PM kickoff is scheduled. October 8, 2002 TIU recorded a big win on Wednesday, defeating CCAC rivals Trinity Christian College by a score of 4-2. After conceding the first goal against the run of play, TIU answered with three first half goals, and added another in the second frame for the final tally. Freshman Nate Bogdanovich notched a hat-trick for the Trojans, while fellow freshman Jeremy Spitzer scored his first collegiate goal. Dave Brown added two assists, and senior defender Ryan Erickson played an important role for Trinity, helping to diffuse a potent TCC attack. "They have a very effective forward tandem, and it was important for us to play intelligently. We were much more patient today defensively, which helped us to be composed with the ball," said Coach Walsh. "Nate's first goal was a real cracker, and that set the tone for the rest of the match." Trinity travel to Mishawaka, IN to face the NAIA's #18 team, Bethel College, on Friday, then host conference foe Kendall College (IL) on Saturday at 2 PM. October 5, 2002 TIU fell to 4-6-1 with an 0-2 loss at St. Xavier University this afternoon. "Unfortunately, we had a player receive a second yellow card with about 40 minutes left in the match," Coach Walsh said. "A team of St. Xavier's ability will manage to make their opponent pay if they are down a man for that long. We possessed reasonably well, and the score was 0-0 when we went down to ten; the outcome could have been different, but we need to learn to be a bit smarter in those situations." TIU face conference foe Trinity Christian at home on Wednesday afternoon for a 4 PM kickoff. October 2, 2002 The TIU Men's Soccer team fell to 0-3-1 in CCAC play with a 1-2 loss this afternoon at University of St. Francis. TIU conceded an early goal on a penalty kick, but were able to equalize through Drew Cook in the second half. Unfortunately, TIU could not hold the momentum, and allowed the winner just 15 minutes from time. TIU were also disappointed to have their own claim for a penalty not given in the second half, but Coach Walsh was sober in his assessment: "the calls of the referee influenced the match, but we should not have allowed ourselves to be in that position; referees do not win and lose matches, and they cannot be expected to perform flawlessly. We need to continue to work on some things, foremost among them being more patient and composed." TIU continues conference play this weekend with a trip to St. Xavier University on Saturday. Kick off is scheduled for 2:30 PM. September 28, 2002 TIU took their time getting into gear in this afternoon's Homecoming match vs. Mt. St. Clare (IA), but scored three goals in the span of five minutes once they found their form to win the match 3-0. TIU outshot their opponents 20-0 in keeping their second clean sheet of the season. Drew Cook was the offensive inspiration for the Trojans, recording a goal and two assists, while captains Derek Winter and Kyle Wilkinson each contributed goals for TIU. "We were able to award some playing time today to a few individuals who have worked very hard in practice," said Coach Walsh. "It was frustrating in the first half, but give their goalkeeper credit, he made some fine saves." TIU travel to Joliet to face St. Francis University in a pivotal CCAC match on Wednesday. September 24, 2002 TIU traveled to Elgin, IL to face CCAC rival Judson College Tuesday, conceding a goal in each half to fall 0-2. "We have been improving aspects of our play in each match, so I remain encouraged," said Coach Walsh. "I think our team will be more dangerous as the season progresses if we are able to find our best form." TIU plays Mt. St. Clare College for Homecoming at 2:00 PM on Saturday. September 18, 2002 The TIU Men's Soccer team overcame a lackluster performance this afternoon to defeat St. Ambrose 1-0 on the strength of a first half goal by Nate Bogdanovich, his third in the last two matches. TIU had numerous chances in the opening half, but were unlucky not to convert, and the defensive corps, led by goalkeeper Dennis Arensen (7 saves) held firm to record their first shutout of the season. TIU faces conference opponent Cardinal Stritch (WI) on Saturday at 2:00 PM. September 14, 2002 The TIU Men's Soccer team traveled to downtown Chicago this afternoon, enlisting a balanced attack to defeat the Archers 5-1. Nate Bogdanovich scored the first two Trojan goals, and assisted on another by Drew Cook, while Derek Winter scored a goal and added an assist for the TIU cause. Dennis Arensen and Josh Cake combined for two saves, as TIU outshot Moody 13-2. St. Ambrose (IA) visit Trinity on Wednesday, a 4 PM kick-off. September 11, 2002 TIU opened their CCAC season this afternoon at home, losing a 1-0 halftime lead to fall 1-2. TIU's record now stands at 1-3. September 7, 2002 The TIU Men's Soccer team faced a tough challenge in Grandview College (IA) this afternoon at home, losing 0-1 to an early first half goal. TIU played very well in the second half, but were unable to turn their advantage into an equalizer, as GVC's stingy defense withheld several dangerous chances. "We played well today against one of the best teams in our region," said Coach Walsh. "We matched their intensity physically, and were perhaps a bit unlucky not to score." TIU face conference rival Robert Morris College on Wednesday, then travel to downtown Chicago to face Moody Bible Institute on Saturday the 14th. September 6, 2002 The TIU Men's Soccer team played its home opener on Friday afternoon, defeating Viterbo University (WI) 4-1 on the strength of three first half goals. Dave Brown opened the scoring in the 10th minute, notching his second goal in as many games. Drew Cook contributed two goals, one a highlight film chip from 45 yards, and Matt Taube scored his first collegiate goal, and added an assist in the Trojan victory. Derek Winter, Joe Ruggiero, and Nate Bogdanovich also recorded assists for TIU. Dennis Arensen made three saves in the goal for Trinity. The Trojans face a tough test tomorrow afternoon when Grandview (IA) visit for a 4:00 PM kickoff. August 31, 2002 TIU Men's Soccer opened its season away to the University of Wisconsin-Parkside (ranked #23 in NCAA Division II) on Saturday. The Trojans played well to start the match, scoring first through Dave Brown (assisted by Drew Cook). However, Parkside equalized on a controversial penalty kick, and the Trojans were forced to settle for a 1-1 half time score. In the 65th minute, Parkside finished a well-placed cross which gave goalkeeper Dennis Arensen (nine saves) no chance, and despite coming close on a few occasions later in the half, TIU were unable to find a second goal. "This is an encouraging start to our season," commented Coach Walsh, "we did some things very well, and our young players contributed. Parkside is an excellent team, full credit to them; this match will help prepare us for a difficult schedule this season." June 6, 2002 Brook Biddy, a former Division I goalkeeper at Liberty University, has accepted a graduate assistant position with TIU, and will serve as a Second Assistant/Goalkeeper Coach. "I am very excited to have someone of Brook's character and ability joining our coaching staff; I anticipate his contribution to our team's further development both on and off the field," said Coach Walsh. Coach Biddy will begin his pursuit of an MDiv at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in the fall.
