News for November 1, 2007

The Trinity men’s 2007 soccer season is coming to the final chapter, and there is plenty of excitement roaming from this season. There is no doubt that this was a rebuilding year for the program, with nine freshmen on board. The season started slow for this young team, mainly due to an extremely tough preconference schedule. Losing multiple games in a row early leads to some adversity, and many teams can fall hard and regress; instead, the team decided to stay strong and get better. The early season defeats translated into experience, toughness, leadership, and the will to win later in the season. The start of the year was baptism under fire; you probably won’t find another team in the country with as many experienced freshmen.

The TIU men’s soccer team in effect had to “learn” how to win this year. Coach Bergmann instilled a feeling of being more like a family than a team. This paid off for the team as they began to gel later in the season, truly finding their groove by winning four straight games. Bergmann has built a strong core for future success in the program on the field, as well as from a spiritual side. A huge part of this future success will be directly correlated to Bergmann’s instrumental work with the talented underclassmen. With only a few pieces missing to the puzzle, expectations for next season are very high.

TIU men’s soccer looks to keep their season alive as they enter the regional tournament with the fifth seed. They play Friday night (Nov. 2) against St. Xavier for the third time this season. Coach Bergmann, who was recently chosen as the CCAC coach of the year, commented on this season and their match up with St. Xavier: “After having a challenging preseason, playing some of the top opponents in the country, these young men are really starting to click and are finishing the season strong. The preseason competition has prepared us for conference and the postseason play. I have been very impressed with their determination and desire to finish the race, honoring the Lord. The team did well enough to finish the conference in second place and to receive the fifth seed in the regional tournament. We will be playing St. Xavier University Friday night. We have had two solid games against them, both during the season and in the conference tournament. It is exciting to play St. X. for a third time; the guys will be ready to battle! It is the perfect time of the season to peak, and the guys are doing it.”

Trinity men’s soccer has reached the peak of their season and are playing their best soccer of the year. They must win to keep their season alive, so come out for the game and support the Trojans!

“I was drawn to Trinity because of their passion for their players' lives and Christian growth, yet with a desire to excel on the field.”
