2007-2008 Men's Basketball News2/21/08Last night was senior night here at the Meyer Sports Complex, and the Trojans played host to the Peregrines of Purdue University Calumet. TIU defeated PUC on the road in overtime January 26th by a final score of 84-76, and Purdue was looking to even the score this time around. Purdue raced out to an early 9-2 lead just three minutes into the game, a lead which they would maintain until halftime with a score of Purdue 39 TIU 22. A different Trinity team emerged from the locker room for the 2nd half as they began to chip away at the deficit. TIU took its first lead with just under four minutes remaining and won the game by a final score of 69-63. TIU outscored the visitors 47-24 in the 2nd half to secure the victory. The TIU defense forced 21 turnovers, while commiting only 12 turnovers on the offensive end. Leading the charge for the Trojans were seniors Chad Reilly and Levi Arnold. Reilly finished the night with 17 points, 8 assists, and 4 steals while Arnold contributed 22 points and 7 rebounds. The win improves TIU's season record to 7-21, 3-8 in CCAC play. 2/18/08Saturday TIU hosted Cardinal Stritch in a CCAC matchup here at the Meyer Sports Complex. Stritch defeated the Trojans two weeks ago in a game at Stritch by a final score of 93-81, so the Trojans were looking to even the score in this one. Trinity limited the Wolves to just 33% shooting for the first half, but managed to shoot just over 31% themselves and trailed at the half by a score of 35-28. The Trojans tough defense continued throughout the 2nd half, as the Wolves shot just 35% for the game, but the hosts managed to shoot only 33% on the night including 5 of 20 from behind the three point line. TIU had 22 field goals on the night compared to only 20 for Stritch, but the difference in this game was at the free throw line, where Stritch attempted 39 free throws, compared to 16 for Trinity. Senior guard Chad Reilly led the Trojans offensively with 18 points on 6 of 17 shooting. Sophomore guard Derrius Shavers contributed 12 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 assists. The loss drops TIU's season record to 6-21 overall, 2-8 in CCAC play. 2/14/08Last night TIU travelled to Elgin for a CCAC matchup with the Eagles of Judson, currently in 1st place in the conference. Judson came out smoking in this one, as they connected on 6 of 14 three point field goals in the first half alone to open up a 38-30 lead at intermission. The Trojans continued to fight throughout the 2nd half, and they got within 5 points at 63-58 with five minutes remaining. That was as close as TIU would get, as Judson pulled out a hard fought win by a final score of 79-70. TIU was led offensively by senior guard Chad Reilly who scored 18 points to go along with 4 assists. Senior guard Levi Arnold came off the bench to score 16 points on 7 of 13 shooting, and senior center Tim Fromstein contributed 10 points to go along with 7 rebounds. The loss drops TIU's season record to 6-20, 2-8 in conference play. 2/10/08Last night TIU played host to the Trolls of Trinity Christian. TCC defeated the Trojans in Palos Heights back on January 16th by a score of 82-65 and the Trojans were looking to even the score in this one. It was back and forth throughout the first half, and the visiting Trolls led at the break by a score of 38-36. TIU tightened the screws on the defensive end in the 2nd half, limiting TCC to only 7 field goals over the game's final 20 minutes. In spite of that, the visitors opened up a 6 point lead with just under 2 minutes to play at 60-54. TIU ran off 5 consecutive points to pull within 1 at 60-59, but Levi Arnold's jump shot at the buzzer missed its mark. The Trojans shot only 34% for the game, including 5 of 20 from beyond the three point line. Senior guard Chad Reilly led the hosts with 17 points on 6 of 9 shooting. The loss drops TIU's season record to 6-19 overall, 2-6 in the CCAC. 1/31/08Last night the Trojans played host to Purdue North Central here at the Meyer Sports Complex. TIU came out sluggish offensively, and trailed early by a score of 19-9. They would chip away at the lead, and TIU held a slim lead at the half at 27-26. A different team emerged from the locker room as Trinity outscored PNC 40-20 in the 2nd half to cruise to a 67-46 win. TIU had four players score in double figures led by senior guard Chad Reilly with 15 points including a perfect 9 for 9 at the free throw line, to go along with 5 assists and 4 steals, senior guard Levi Arnold contributed 13 points, freshman Ignas Verbus chipped in with 12 points, and senior center Tim Schifsky had 10 points and 4 rebounds. The Trojans shot a sizzling 61% in the 2nd half, and they limited Purdue to 33% shooting. The win improves TIU's overall record to 6-17, 2-4 in the CCAC. 1/27/08On Saturday afternoon the Trojans travelled to Purdue Calumet for a CCAC matchup with the Peregrines. TIU jumped out to a 33-28 lead at the half, and the lead swelled to 38-28 just two minutes into the 2nd half. At that point the hosts picked up the defensive pressure to battle their way back into the game. Purdue actually led by eight points with just over three minutes remaining, but TIU was not finished. The Trojans fought their way back into the game, and a basket by 6'4" senior DeVon Preyer with 20 seconds remaining gave Trinity the lead at 72-70. However, the Peregrines would score with 9 seconds left to tie the game at 72. A running layup attempt by 6'1" senior Levi Arnold rolled off the rim, and a rebound shot attempt by 6'2" sophomore Derrius Shavers rimmed out, and we were headed for overtime. The Trojans dominated the extra session to win going away by a final score of 84-76. TIU was led in scoring by 5'9" senior guard Chad Reilly with 20 points to go along with 7 assists. Shavers came off the bench to finish with 18 points and 7 rebounds. Preyer chipped in with 15 points and 7 boards, and 6'9" freshman Ignas Verbus contributed 17 points. The win improves TIU's season record to 5-17, 1-4 in the CCAC. 1/25/08Last night TIU headed up to Milwaukee for a CCAC matchup with Cardinal Stritch. Stritch jumped out to an early lead and built the lead up to 12 points at the half at 49-37. The lead swelled to 24 points at 82-58 with just under 7 minutes remaining. At that point TIU went on a 16-0 run, and they eventually cut the lead to 7 at 86-79 with just under a minute and a half left. That was as close as TIU could get as Stritch knocked down their foul shots down the stretch. TIU was led in scoring by senior guard Levi Arnold who contributed 20 points, including 4 three point field goals. Senior guard Chad Reilly also chipped in with 18 points. Junior center Damien Cole was instrumental in the 2nd half comeback as he racked up 9 points to go along with 8 rebounds in just 16 minutes of action. The loss drops TIU's season record to 4-17, 0-4 in the CCAC. 1/20/08Last night TIU played host to the Eagles of Judson College in a CCAC matchup. TIU jumped out to an early lead, and led 39-31 at the intermission. Judson switched to a zone defense in the 2nd half and clawed their way back into the game and eventually prevailed by a final score of 85-72. The free throw line again proved to be a problem for the Trojans, as they attempted only 8 foul shots compared to 29 for Judson. Senior guard Chad Reilly led the Trojans with 23 points and 6 assists. Senior forward DeVon Preyer knocked down 8 of 11 shots en route to a season high of 18 points to go along with a team high 7 rebounds. The loss drops the Trojans record to 4-16 overall and 0-3 in conference play. 1/17/08Last night TIU travelled to Trinity Christian for a CCAC matchup with the Trolls. The hosts darted out to an early lead which they pushed to 12 points at halftime with a score of 38-26. The Trojans could get no closer than 7 points the rest of the way, as TCC cruised to a 82-65 win. In spite of the losing effort, TIU got double doubles from both 6'8" senior Chris Schmidt with 16 points and 11 rebounds, and 6'9" freshman Ignas Verbus with 14 points and 10 boards. TIU won the battle of the boards by outrebounding the Trolls 43-32, but 3-19 shooting for the Trojans was too much to overcome. TIU falls to 4-15 overall and 0-2 in CCAC play. 1/10/08The Trojan men opened up CCAC conference play last night by hosting Calumet College. The hot shooting of 6'9" Ignas Verbus helped Trinity race out to a 43-40 lead at intermission. Calumet picked up their offense in the 2nd half, as they drained 5 of 8 three point shots to build a lead which they would not relinquish as the visitors held on for a 92-82 win. The difference in the game was foul shooting, as the visitors attempted 29 free throws to only 8 for TIU. Verbus finished the night with a career high of 29 points of 13 of 17 shooting to go along with 8 rebounds and 3 blocks. Senior guard Levi Arnold drained 8 of 13 shots for a total of 21 points. The loss drops TIU's season record to 4-14, 0-1 in conference play. 12/9/07It's been a huge week for the Trojans as they played 4 games in 5 days, including a tournament at Hope College in Holland, Michigan over the weekend. TIU went 2-2 over the rugged 4 game stretch, moving their season record to 4-11. They are back in action this Saturday versus St. Xavier at the Meyer Sports Complex at 3pm. Saint Francis 91 TIU 83 The week started on Tuesday evening as TIU travelled down to Joliet for a CCAC crossover game with NAIA Division 1 St. Francis. The first half featured hot shooting by both teams, as TIU shot just over 54% and the host Saints shot over 52% and St. Francis clung to a two point lead at the intermission, 41-39. TIU continued to score points throughout the 2nd half, but their lack of defense proved to be the difference, as St. Francis knocked down some key free throws down the stretch to pull out the eight point victory. TIU was led in scoring by senior guard Levi Arnold with 21 points including 5 three point field goals. Sophomore guard Derrius Shavers and freshman forward Ignas Verbus chipped in with 18 and 17 points respectively. St. Francis finished the game by shooting just over 52%, thereby becoming the first team to shoot over 50% versus the Trojan defense this season. TIU 82 Carthage 64 The following night the Trojans were right back in action with a home game versus NCAA Division 3 Carthage College. Carthage entered the season ranked #30 nationally in the NCAA division 3 poll. The Trojans came out smoking in this one, as a 15-0 run midway through the first half put the Trojans in front by a score of 31-10. Carthage trimmed the lead to 15 at the half at 39-24. They would not get much closer the rest of the way as the Trojans cruised to an 18 point win. For the game TIU shot a sizzling 66.7%, and their defense limited the Redmen to 33% shooting, including only 5 for 26 from the three point line. Senior guard Levi Arnold paced Trinity with 19 points on 7 of 10 shooting. Senior Chris Schmidt had a monster game for TIU as he finished with 20 points, 9 rebounds, and 6 assists. Sophomore guard Derrius Shavers also popped in 18 points, and freshman forward Ignas Verbus contributed 13 points and 5 rebounds. #7 Aquinas 79 TIU 64 The Trojans travelled to Hope College in Holland, Michigan on Friday for a matchup with NAIA Division II powerhouse Aquinas College, undefeated and ranked #7 in the country. The Trojans were without the services of leading scorer Levi Arnold, as academic duties prevented him from making the trip with the team. Trinity fought hard early, and a Chad Reilly jumper pulled them to within 2 points at 24-22 with just under 8 minutes remaining in the half. The Saints would then close the half on a 16-4 run to take a 40-26 lead into the locker room at halftime. TIU played Aquinas evenly throughout the 2nd half, but eventually fell by a final score of 79-64. TIU was led by senior guard Chad Reilly, who poured in 19 points. Sophomore guard Derrius Shavers and 6'9" freshman forward Ignas Verbus were also in double figures with 15 and 12 points respectively. The Trojans missed the outside shooting of Arnold, as they were limited to 37% shooting for the game, and only 25% from beyond the 3 point line. TIU 87 Marygrove 69 Friday's loss pitted the Trojans with a Saturday matchup against Marygrove College out of Detroit, Michigan. Sophomore guard Derrius Shavers had the hot hand from the outset in this one, as by halftime he had already racked up 24 points and 9 rebounds. Trinity maintained a comfortable lead througout the 2nd half, cruising to an 18 point win and thereby capturing the 3rd place trophy. Shavers would finish the game by setting a tournament record with 36 points on 14 for 17 shooting, including 4 of 4 from beyond the three point line. Senior guard Chad Reilly also had an outstanding game for the Trojans, as he just missed a triple double by recording 18 points to go along with 9 assists and a career high of 9 rebounds. Senior center Chris Schmidt was also in double figures with 15 points, and freshman forward Ignas Verbus chipped in with 8 points and 8 rebounds. Trinity dominated the boards to the tune of 47-28, and the Trojan offense committed only 9 turnovers, their lowest total this season. Shavers was named to the All Tournament team for his efforts. 11/20/07Monday evening the Trojans travelled up to Sheboygan, Wisconsin, for a matchup with Division 3 opponent Lakeland College. Lakeland cruised to a 42-38 lead at halftime behind 14 points from Shane Grube. TIU came alive again in the 2nd half, outscoring the host Muskies 47-43 in the second stanza to force overtime. The Trojans outscored Lakeland 15-6 in the extra session to pull out a hard faught 100-91 win. TIU was paced offensively by senior guard Levi Arnold, who drained a career high 8 three point shots in 10 attempts for a total of 28 points, also a career high. Senior center Chris Schmidt notched a career high in points for the 2nd straight game, as he finished 10 for 16 from the floor for a total of 24 points to go along with 6 rebounds and 4 steals. Senior guard Chad Reilly played an outstanding floor game, contributing 14 points, 5 assists, and only 1 turnover. Sophomore forward Derrius Shavers contributed 13 points and 9 rebounds. TIU shot a sizzling 62% for the game, and their defense limited the hosts to just over 39% shooting. The Trojan defense limited Kris Saiberlich, a 3 time all conference player for Lakeland, to just 6 points on 2 of 15 shooting. The win improves TIU's season record to 2-5. Trinity is back in action tomorrow, as they travel to Indiana Wesleyan, currently ranked #5 in the NAIA Division 2 poll. 11/18/07In the consolation game of the tournament, TIU was paired against Martin Luther College, a 94-82 loser to host Bethel on Friday night. Trinity came out ready to play in this one, and by halftime they had built up a 15 point lead at 49-34. Martin Luther would get no closer throughout the 2nd half, as the Trojans won by a final score of 91-73. Trinity shot just under 59% for the game, including 52 points in the paint, and they limited Luther to under 39% shooting for the game. Senior center Chris Schmidt (Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin) had a monster game for TIU, as he posted career highs of 21 points, 14 rebounds, and 4 steals. Senior guard Levi Arnold (Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin) knocked down 4 three point shots en route to 22 points, and sophomore forward Derrius Shavers (Chicago, Illinois) sank 9 of 14 shots en route to a career high of 20 points. The win brings Trinity's season record to 1-5. The Trojans are in action right away on Monday, as they travel to Lakeland College in Wisconsin for a matchup at 7:30pm. 11/18/07Friday night TIU faced Bethany Lutheran College at the Bethel College tournament in St. Paul, Minnesota. TIU shot a sizzling 74% from the field in the first half en route to a 43-42 halftime advantage. It was back and forth throughout the second half, and senior guard Levi Arnold (Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin) drained a three point shot to tie the game at 83 with under a minute to play. TIU senior center Chris Schmidt (Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin) drew a charge on the ensuing possession, and the Trojans called timeout with 3.1 seconds on the clock with the score still deadlocked at 83 apiece. Senior guard Chad Reilly's (McHenry, Illinois) desperation shot at the buzzer was off target, and we would head to overtime. TIU opened up a 3 point lead less than a minute into the extra session, but Bethany would come storming back. Turnovers plagued the Trojans throughout the entire game, particularly down the stretch, and Bethany made their free throws to win by a final score of 100-93. TIU was led offensively by Arnold, who contributed a season high 26 points on 9 of 14 shooting. Sophomore forward Derrius Shavers (Chicago, Illinois) chipped in with 17 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists. Trinity shot a sizzling 65.5% for the game, and limited Bethany to under 47% shooting, but 27 turnovers doomed the Trojans, dropping their season record to 0-5. 11/12/07It was a rough weekend for the Trojans, as they were blown out twice in the La Quinta Inn & Suites Tournament hosted by TIU. Friday's opponent was Wilberforce University who defeated TIU by a final score of 82-55. Poor shooting plagued Trinity throughout the game, and the hosts finished a dismal 20-61 from the field, including 3 for 23 from beyond the 3 point line. The poor shooting came in spite of the fact that TIU had all kinds of wide open shots that just did not fall. 6'9" freshman Ignas Verbus led TIU with 12 points. Friday's loss set up a matchup with Bethel College in the 3rd place game. TIU kept it close early and an Ignas Verbus jumper tied the game at 19 with just over 12 minutes left in the half, but Bethel would build up a 25 point lead by halftime and cruise to a 91-49 win. Poor shooting and turnovers hurt TIU in this one, as the hosts turned the ball over 22 times compared to just 12 for the visiting Pilots. Trinity finished the game shooting 19-51 from the field, including 4 for 18 from downtown. TIU was led by senior guard Chad Reilly who contributed 11 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists. The loss drops TIU's season record to 0-4. The men will be back in action this weekend as they travel to Bethel College in St. Paul, MN for a Friday night matchup with Bethany Lutheran at 6pm. 11/7/07Last night the Trojans travelled to Cedar Rapids, Iowa for a matchup with Mount Mercy College. Senior guard Chad Reilly knocked down 4 of 5 shots for 12 points in the first half to keep it close, and a Levi Arnold 3 point shot pulled TIU within a point at 24-23 with just over 6 minutes remaining in the half. Mount Mercy closed out the 1st half with a 16-7 run to take a 39-30 lead into the locker room at intermission. TIU came out inspired for the 2nd half, as they opened the 2nd stanza with a 18-5 run over the first 6 minutes of the half. Senior center Tim Schifsky provided the spark for the Trojans off the bench. It was back and forth over the remainder of the half, and TIU pulled ahead on 2 free throws by sophomore forward Derrius Shavers with just under a minute to go. However an old fashioned 3 point play by Mount Mercy center Curtis Kilgore gave the Mustangs the lead for good, as TIU fell by a final score of 79-73. Arnold led Trinity in scoring with 21 points, and Reilly finished with 14 points. The hosts were led by Kilgore, who finished the night with 17 points and 9 rebounds. The loss drops Trinity's record to 0-2 on the season. This weekend Trinity will host the La Quinta Inn & Suites tournament, with a Friday night matchup with Wilberforce University at 8pm. 11/5/07Last Thursday the TIU men's basketball team opened its season at McKendree University in Lebanon, Illinois. This is a tough matchup for TIU, as McKendree is rated 23rd in the country in the first NAIA Division 1 poll. TIU had problems stopping MU guard Eric Palm throughout the first half, as Palm dropped 14 first half points in leading his team to a 44-32 lead at intermission. The Trojans narrowed the gap to 44-39 with a 7-0 run to start the 2nd half, but that was as close as they would get, eventually falling by a final score of 74-57. The TIU defense kicked in the 2nd half, as they limited the Bearcats to 39% shooting after intermission, but it was too little and too late. Palm finished the night with 20 points to lead the hosts. Senior guard Levi Arnold led Trinity with 15 points and 7 rebounds, and senior guard Chad Reilly contributed 11 points and a career high 12 assists. Senior center Chris Schmidt chipped in with 12 points and 6 rebounds for the Trojans. TIU is back in action this Tuesday as they travel to Cedar Rapids, Iowa for a matchup with Mount Mercy. |
