The Trojan football team closed the season with a victory this afternoon on home soil versus William Penn University (IA). TIU got off to a great start with a 17 point first quarter, and never looked back. Masaki Matsumoto opened the scoring for the Trojans on a 63 yard run, but it was intangibles that carried the day for TIU, as Eric Appiah ran a fumble recovery 85 yards for the second Trojan touchdown, and Mike Davis ran a blocked punt 8 yards into the endzone in the third quarter to put the game out of reach. The TIU defense had seven takeaways on the day (4 INT, 3 fumbles recovered), as well as 5 sacks for a total of 41 yards lost. Matsumoto once again led the offense with 181 yards rushing on 22 carries for a stunning 8.2 average. TIU finishes the season with a 6-5 (3-4 conference) record.

November 2, 2002

TIU improved to 5-4 (2-3 conference) with a 9-6 overtime victory over Iowa Wesleyan this afternoon. David Merrill connected on field goals of 19 and 36 yards during regulation, and kept his nerve in overtime for the game winner from 15 yards. The Trojan defense continued to lead the way, allowing just 71 rushing yards on the afternoon while making 14 tackles for a loss, and blocking a field goal attempt. TIU dominated the time of possession by nearly 25 minutes. On offense, Masaki Matsumoto carried 30 times for 183 yards to lead the Trojan effort. TIU got on the scoreboard first when Masaki Matsumoto capped off a 31 yard drive with a one yard touch down plunge in the second quarter. TIU increased their lead to 14-0 when quarterback Ryan Holman sprinted 83 yards for a touchdown with just 23 seconds remaining in the half. It took TIU nearly the whole third quarter to put their 21st point on the board, but it came when Holman passed to Tu Price for a 10 yard touchdown. USF got on the board in the beginning of the fourth quarter, but the TIU defense responded with back to back touchdowns. Conference player of the week Ryan Betscher scored his first touchdown of the game and second of the season when he returned an interception 40 yards. Betscher wasted no time getting his second touchdown when he picked off a USF pass on the ensuing drive and returned it 91 yards. "Betsch" displayed speed and agility as he scampered across the field for the game's final points. On the afternoon, TIU had 381 total yards, 287 of which were on the ground. Holman led the TIU rushing attack with 129 yards on nine carries (9.4 avg.).

The Trojans bounced back from a defeat at Malone College and prevailed with a 21-14 home victory over Geneva College (PA). The Trojans improve to 3-1 on the year and are yet to play a conference game.

With a capacity crowd on hand for the annual Homecoming game, the Trojans used all four quarters before finally putting the Golden Tornados away for good. The game winning touchdown came when Masaki Matsumoto plunged 15 yards into the end zone with only 25 ticks remaining on the game clock.
TIU struck first when TIU quarterback Ryan Holman connected on a beautiful 16 yard pass play to Jerad English. However, TIU had to settle for only six when the extra point attempt failed. Geneva would take a 7-6 lead before the Trojans' Tu Price broke the tie with a 31 yard touchdown catch from Holman. Chad Cox would rush for the two point conversion, giving the Trojans a seven point lead. The Tornados tied the score at the beginning of the fourth quarter, and it remained that way until Matsumoto's game winning touchdown.

TIU quarterback Ryan Holman connected nine of his 12 passes for a total of 110 yards and two touchdowns. Tu Price again led the TIU rushing attack with 86 yards on 17 carries. Price also caught the ball three times for 47 yards and one TD. Jerad English caught two balls, one of which was a touchdown. Matsumoto carried the ball ten times and totaled 46 yards on the day with one TD scamper. The TIU offense totaled 327 yards, 217 of which were on the ground.

Daniel Berry once again led TIU with 12 tackles, and Aaron Tier added nine. The Trojan defense picked off two passes courtesy of Josh Hayes and Blake Burgess. The TIU defense gave up 283 yards of total offense to the Tornados.

TIU will compete in their first conference game of the year when they travel to McKendree College in Southern Illinois on Saturday, October 5th. McKendree upset the number one team in the nation (NAIA), Georgetown College, earlier in the year. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 pm.

TIU took a 13-0 lead into the locker room at halftime. Masaki Matsumoto capped off the opening touchdown drive (11 plays 57 yards) with a three yard run. Tu Price put the Trojans up 13-0 (David Merrill extra point failed) after a 36 yard dash which ended with Price soaring over the goal line for the first of his two touchdowns on the afternoon. The TIU drive lasted only 3:40 and totaled 78 yards. The TIU defense got its only scare of the day after Aurora came out of the locker room and opened the second half with a 66 yard drive resulting in a touchdown. However, the Trojans responded with TIU quarterback Ryan Holman plunging five yards to increase the TIU lead to 21-7 (Holman rushed for a two point conversion). Price later scampered for a 60 yard run that put the Trojans up 28-7. After an AU score, TIU got their final score, fittingly from their defense. Cornerback Eric Appiah picked off an AU pass and took it the distance of 45 yards for the score. Appiah's touchdown gives the Trojan defense its second touchdown in as many games.Price rushed for 165 yards on nine carries (good for an 18.3 average).
